China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) has secured a $30 billion loan from China Development Bank to fund overseas acquisitions. TiVo Inc. (TIVO), the creator of the digital video recorder, recently reported second quarter fiscal year 2010 results. The company delivered improved results compared to its guidance. Dollar Financial Corporation’s (DLLR) fourth quarter earnings came in at 39 cents per share, ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 35 cents per share. However, total revenues declined to $124.4 million from $150.3 million in the same quarter last year. Micros Systems (MCRS) designs, manufactures, markets, and services enterprise information solutions for the hospitality and specialty retail industries. Yesterday, the company posted better-than-expected results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. Earlier today, PetroChina Company Ltd. (PTR) reported results for the six months ended June 30, 2009. Net income for the period was 50.5 billion yuan ($7.4 billion), down more than 7% from 54.4 billion yuan ($7.7 billion) a year earlier.[More...]

Shanghai’s Stock Exchange Bubble

More evidence appears today of the bubble affecting the Chinese stock market after part of the Chinese stimulus was diverted into the markets. The French economic daily Les Echos reports today that the Shanghai stock exchange is today the world’s fourth largest market with a capitalization of about 2.3 trillion USD. IndexUniverse had an article up yesterday about the rebalancing at Russell Investments that occurs every June and was just implemented for 2009. IU seemed most interested in the increasing presence of Chinese stocks. The five largest stocks in the Russell Global Index (I'm not familiar with this one) in order are; Petrochina (PTR) ExxonMobil (XOM) Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (IDCBY) China Mobile (CHL) a client holding Walmart (WMT) We are all much more aware of China as an investment destination than we were seven years ago. (7:11am ET) There was plenty of economic data released in the US during the day; however the equity market sidetracked until 2pm ET, when with prices at modest losing levels on the week until that point, suddenly, and for no discernable reason, there was a rally that left the indexes with small gains through Thursday. Perhaps traders were anticipating a positive quarterly report from Google (GOOG +2.4% on +151% of average daily trading volume)? After the close, the company did not disappoint, beating both revenue and EPS estimates. The company posted net income of $1.42 billion ($5.16/share), up +8% from the $1.31 billion ($4.84/share) recorded during the same period a year ago. Revenue for 1Q2009 increased +10% to $4.07 billion, from $3.7 billion, excluding traffic acquisition costs. Chinese Officials' Visit to Oklahoma Puts Focus on Energy

Oct. 13--More than a dozen professors from China University of Petroleum in Beijing were in Oklahoma over the weekend to learn about natural gas production.
They were guests of the Harding Shelton Group, a team of experts in extracting gas from shale formations.
The company, which has offices in Oklahoma City and Dallas, is hoping to establish a foothold in China, a country thought to have significant natural gas resources.
