Bloomberg had this article out about how the U.S. housing market lost $3.3 trillion in 2008 AND that 1 in 6 people with mortgages are underwater, or 17%. It's not getting any better. We have pending home sales coming out today at 10:00AM - consensus 82.3 (range: 78.2 to 84, previous actual: 82.3). I'll be really surprised if pending sales remained "unchanged". Motor vehicle sales are also coming out (total consensus: 7.7M (range:7.3M to 8.1M, previous actual: 7.7M). This is another consensus estimate where it is also "unchanged". Whatever.
Oil and Energy Stocks Hit Unfairly Yesterday

I don’t know about you, but yesterdays market seemed like a blessing. Sure we bad news thrown at us left and right, and 2nd quarter earnings are only going to hurt us more, but the best thing of all was the drop in oil price.Lets not kid ourselves. Oil is not on a downward movement, so, whenever its breaths downward, we should definitely capitalize on it.
MAMMOTH DISCOVERY: Companies Bet Big on South Texas Gas Find

Oct. 6--Last October, just as the economy was tilting into crisis, a small oil and gas company in Houston quietly announced the discovery of a mammoth natural gas field in South Texas that at any other time might have garnered bigger headlines.

Petrohawk Energy's find, however, did not go unnoticed in the oil and gas industry -- and it didn't take long before oil companies large and small began making their moves.

Today, though the economy and natural gas prices remain weak, the Eagle Ford shale remains one of the hottest prospects in North America, and energy companies are moving forward there even as they're pulling back elsewhere.

Alaska's Oil Tax: Is It Driving Away or Attracting Investment?

Oct. 2--Alaska officials say the state's 3-year-old net profits production tax, and a package of exploration and capital investment incentives that go with it, are bringing new companies to the state and stimulating exploration.

The tax hasn't driven investment away," said Cherie Nienhuis, a petroleum economist in the state Department of Revenue.

Marilyn Crockett, director of the Alaska Oil and Gas Association, said the incentives do help new explorers and small companies.

Dec. 14--Activity levels are expected to be brisk on the North Slope this winter, despite the recent plunge of oil prices to levels not seen in years.

The plunge has steepened in the last two weeks, but much of this winter's drilling and construction was planned months or even years ago, and much of it will go forward, the operating companies say.

The increase essentially covers four long lead-time projects the company has underway, including a heavy oil test development, the start of work on BP's planned Liberty offshore field, and the company's share of the Point Thomson development being led by ExxonMobil Corp. and the Denali gas pipeline project being done with ConocoPhillips.
