Biggest Declines Among S&P

The following is a list of the S&P 500 firms where the analysts have been cutting their expectations for the current fiscal year the most over the last month. Most likely these firms reported disappointing earnings or gave negative guidance on their conference calls. Historically, you have not wanted to be invested in companies where the analysts who follow them most closely see the earnings prospects diminishing. Also, estimates in motion tend to remain in motion. The first bit of bad news is rarely the last (the cockroach theory). This means that the current expectations, even though down from last month, are probably still to high for these firms. To weed out anomalies, only those firms that are currently expected to earn more than $0.50 in 2009 are included and only those firms where there are a minimum of three estimates in the system. If you have these stocks in your portfolio, you might want to reconsider[More...]

This Is Not Time To Own Semiconductor Stocks

This is not time to own semiconductor stocks, either chip makers or equipment manufacturers. According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, worldwide sales of semiconductors were $14.2 billion in February, a decline of 30.4% compared to February 2008 sales of $20.3 billion. This is a continuation of the decline observed from the prior year. Sales were down by $1.1 billion from January 2009 levels of $15.3 billion. 'The global semiconductor industry is going through one of the steepest corrections in its history,' said SIA President George Scalise. 'While it would be premature to conclude that the sales have hit bottom, there are some indications that the rate of decline has moderated from the final quarter of 2008.' 'Demand for semiconductors is likely to continue well below 2008 levels for the next few quarters with a gradual recovery to follow as the global economy recovers,'[More...]

Are Tech Stocks Expensive?

This weekend we ran the Alert HQ process and generated the list of Trend Leaders. These stocks and ETFs are distinguished by strong recent performance. Using daily data, we look for stocks that are over their 50-day moving average. We then use three different technical indicators to determine trend: Aroon, DMI and MACD. All three indicators must be registering strong readings in order for a stock or ETF to make the list of Trend Leaders. Below we present those stocks from the Tech sector that made this week's list. Data is as of the close on Friday, 3/20/09.
Virtual Funds: Technology Fund's Ranking/Performance In Q3 '08 And Overall

Technology stocks have held relatively well, especially the blue chip companies. I think this sector's performance will be scattered all over the board, some companies will do well while others will suffer for a prolonged period of time. So, it's a good sector to sift through, but you have to carefully assess how the overall economic conditions may influence your picks' earnings power. Orange line in the chart below shows how my Technology Fund has performed relative to the m100 (a collective Marketocracy fund that uses picks from the top 100 members), S&P 500, Dow Jones Index, and Nasdaq. <br[More...]

Keep An Eye on XLF, XHB, XLY and XLE for Rally Strength

We discussed about the VIX and I gave my opinion that the market could turn last week. For the last few days, we've been seeing rallies in the market, especially in the weak oversold sectors like Financials, Homebuilders and Consumer Discretionary. We've also seen continued sell-off in Coal and Steel sectors after brief spell of consolidation. As I said on 9 Jul, watch for a retest to go short or get some Put Options. It retested and broke down again last week, hope you caught some of the action. What about the week ahead? The major trend is still to the downside and watch for resistance at 1270 for the S&P 500 index. Also watch the Financials (XLF), Homebuilders (XHB), Consumer Discretionary (XLY) and Energy (XLE)[More...]
