Spotlight On: Software and Programming The software industry is ever changing and subject to new mergers, acquisitions, partnerships and strategic alliances between vendors. The industry can be fairly described as consisting of tiers. Tier I vendors serve the upper end of the market. Their products are for the Fortune 500, multi-location, and multi-national companies. These companies have complex needs and rely upon ERP systems. The major Tier I players are SAP and Oracle. Tier II vendors focus on companies that are fairly complex and large and require significant work but are not as large as the the Fortune 500. This may be the sweet spot of the software industry. The market is fairly large and the customers require fairly sophisticated product and support. Leaders in this market are Lawson, Infor, and[More...]

Again, fundamentals are more or less irrelevent so missing on the top and bottom line is ok now. Just buy stocks. Quality Systems (QSII) missed on both revenue and earnings but readers who have been around a while know the thesis on this sector. Obama will funnel many dollars to electronic medical records hence wait for the gifts to shower on these companies - this has been driving the group for over half a year now. (Mar 25, 2009: Stimulus Funds for E-Records Augur Big Windfall for Small Health Firms) In fact delays on these gifts from the taxpayers is the reason QSII said they missed the quarter.
Jobless Claims Heading In The Right Direction

There were a couple more economic reports released this morning that show the economy is headed toward the path of recovery. The Philly Fed Index showed a much smaller than expected decline for June, coming in at -2.2 vs. expectations of -17.0. This is a small positive sign for manufacturing in that region. Also, the weekly jobless claims data came in-line at 608,000, but the continuing claims figure fell to 6.69 million vs. expectations that they would total 6.84 million. That is a nice drop, and supports the thesis that the worst of the job losses are behind us. The early leadership in the market is coming from financials and healthcare, while the laggards are tech and retail. Asian markets were lower overnight; the dollar is mixed this morning, while most commodities are lower (oil, gold); the 10-year yield is bouncing to[More...]
