ETF Screener: More Bad Than Good

The Market welcomed President-Elect Obama with the worst post Election Day performance ever. Before any partisans get too worked up, we know none of his policies are in place yet. That being said, the market is forward looking and valuations will have to include the inevitable higher costs of capital due to higher taxes and more regulations. If the cost of capital goes up, it’s necessary for the underlying investment to lose value. We hope beyond hope and pray his Presidency is a success. Right or left we all share this incredible ride called America together and his success or failure will impact all of us. Moving away for politics and back to our weekly ETF Screener post, we see the Japanese ETFs we highlighted on October 23rd have outperformed big-time.
Three Excellent Emerging Market ETF's

The other day, I posted about two popular emerging market ETF (EEM, VWO) choices. While you aren't likely to go too wrong adding one of these two major ETFs to your portfolio, I believe you can do better. The three choices I examine here are all fundamental analysis ETFs, rather than based on old-fashioned market weighted capitalization like the prior two choices. What this means is the underlying stock choices are chosen on a rules-based entry system rather than how fat (or skinny) the valuations have gotten. I have written about fundamental analysis systems before, including <a[More...]

Fundamental vs Cap-Weighted Indexing Debate

I have written many times about moving along with better investing, thinking about long-term themes that will improve your investing results. One of those themes, for passive investors, is to use low-cost products, like ETFs or index mutual funds. For the average investor, this will produce better than average results. Another theme is to use those same type of products that mirror some type of fundamental, as opposed to capitalization-weighted index.John Bogle's (creator of the Vanguard mutual fund behemoth) back-testing research several decades ago that showed that most investors would be better off in funds that simply mirrored the then best mark[More...]
