While I doubt the veracity of the current move up in oil (Mar 27: Thesis Buying 101 in Oil - Even Experts Mock It) this Bloomberg piece does parallel completely my thoughts over the longer term that we've been stating for the better part of a year; when the world economy does indeed return to stabilization, and then growth the lack of investment now will cause a repeat of what we went through in 2007 and early 2008 in prices of commodities. The S&P 500 comprises of 500 large cap common stocks actively traded in the United States. The largees public companies that are traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ are included in the S&P 500 index. The S&P 500 index was lunched in 1957 and is a value weighted index which is based on the 500 American stocks with the largest market capitalizations. As the economy deteriorates, one of the first casualties will be corporate profits.? Earnings estimates have been falling very fast for 2009.? Recently estimate cuts for 2009 have been running at about 8x the number of estimate increases.? P/E-based valuations become tricky in such an environment -- you are shooting at a moving target.? One way around this is to focus on the low (or most pessimistic) estimate, rather than on the mean estimate.? Assume that everyone else will move to where the biggest pessimist is now. This is not to say that the most pessimistic analyst today can't be too optimistic, but at least he will be closer than most. On this basis, there are some very compelling values out there.? Nov. 19--Oil and gas companies on Wednesday gave a mixed forecast on their plans for work in Alaska next year.
Some announced plans to cut back on spending and drilling on the North Slope -- Conoco said it won't be drilling an exploration well for the first time in 45 years -- though they also said they will continue to pursue a handful of big, new projects.
But it still plans to work on projects such as the proposed North Slope gas pipeline to supply North American markets and its new $1.5 billion Liberty oil field in the Beaufort Sea.
