Total Q3 profit halved, but better than expected

PARIS - Total SA, Europe's third-largest oil company, reported Wednesday that profits were more than halved in the third quarter, due to a sharp fall in energy prices, but were still somewhat better than expected.

Total posted third quarter adjusted net profit of euro1.9 billion ($2.8 billion), 54 percent below the year ago figure of euro4.1 billion but ahead of the euro1.8 billion that analysts forecast.

Total's earnings were on par with the steep drop in third quarter profits already reported by larger rivals Exxon Mobil Corp., Royal Dutch Shell PLC and BP PLC. The industry is struggling to adapt to lower demand and the volatility in oil prices that has seen the price of a barrel spike to nearly $150 last July, then stage a retreat back to around $30 early this year.

Nov. 3--Critics are raising questions about Royal Dutch Shell and its subsidiary Shell Energy North America, which has the inside track this week to sign a contract with the Marin Energy Authority.

In March, Royal Dutch Shell, a multinational corporation based in The Hague, Netherlands, announced it was ending all new investment in wind, solar and hydrogen energy and would instead concentrate its remaining renewable energy investments on biofuels.

Rothman is just one of several Marin residents who have objected to doing business with Shell since the authority announced last month that the Houston-based company was leading a field of bidders and that it had entered into detailed contract negotiations with the authority.

Oct. 29--Oil titans Exxon Mobil Corp. and Royal Dutch Shell both reported steep drops in third-quarter earnings, hurt by oil and natural gas prices that were down sharply from last year's peaks and weak economic conditions that continued to stifle global energy demand.

Exxon Mobil, the largest U.S. oil company, said net income fell 65 percent to $4.73 billion, or 98 cents a share, from $14.8 billion, or $2.85, a year earlier.

Lower commodity prices weighed heavily on results, reducing earnings by about $4.9 billion and overwhelming a nearly 3 percent increase in production to 2.3 million barrels of oil equivalent, the Irving-based oil company said in a statement.
