While I've traded Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (RDY) in the past, I have not touched it in the past few years; however as we await for the new Market Vectors Indian Small Cap fund to launch I was poking my nose around Indian stocks this weekend since the Indian market has corrected quite a bit (and rebounded from oversold levels last week). So this name came back onto my radar in the limited universe of Indian ADRs. (full list of Indian stocks available at TickerSpy)[More...]

Pharma Majors To Gain From India

All major pharmaceutical companies that have operations in India are likely to benefit from the latest decision made by the Commerce Ministry in that country. The ministry accepted the Mashelkar committee’s report, according to which India will continue to allow patents on incremental innovations if the enhancements are beneficial to patients. The decision was taken amidst severe protests from generic players and health activists who fear this will not allow cheaper generic drugs to enter the market. On the basis of 2008 sales figures, the Indian pharmaceutical market ranks 13th in the world, with sales of $7.7bn last year (an increase of 4% over 2007). The rapidly growing middle income group with higher disposable income makes it an attractive place for major pharma companies. The pharmaceutical market is expected to grow at 12.3% through 2014 surpassing many other economies in the emerging markets. Many of these[More...]

Early Week Earnings Watch

2nd of the 3 big weeks for S&P 500 type companies arrives; last week was an unqualified success of setting expectations low, cutting expenses aggressively and beating very slow to adjust analysts expectations. Now with the bar raised higher as expectations ramped up, I expect the sledding to be a bit tougher. Here are names of interest in the early part of the week; with names the market will be watching and some additional ones that I like to look at. Tuesday will be the more interesting day. I forgot about earnings knee jerk reaction time, when I shorted American Express (AXP) and Capital One (COF) late Friday; both report Thursday so despite extreme overvaluations and gaps in each chart I'll be heading to the sidelines before then on the 2 positions.<br[More...]

Healthcare Stock: Are They Truly Recession-Proof?

Healthcare Stocks…Are They Truly Recession-Proof? This past weekend, I was up at my hunting and fishing club in northeast Pennsylvania enjoying some ice fishing. At our club at least, it’s a pleasant social activity with great food, wine and stories shared among the members and spouses. This year, it happened to fall on the coldest day of the winter, with the temperature dipping to 18 below. As you might expect this close to the inauguration, many folks are wondering what effect President Obama’s policies will have on the markets and investing. One of our members who’s a doctor, said: “Invest in healthcare stocks. It doesn’t matter who’s in the Whitehouse, and they’re recession-proof.” Are they? The answer depends on what area of healthcare you’re talking about. According to <a[More...]
