While the heart of earnings season starts up in 2 weeks (already?) some names with non typical quarter ends (i.e. July instead of June) are out this week. We mentioned Monsanto (MON) this morning, Darden Restaurants (DRI) reported last night (not so great on guidance) along with Oracle (ORCL), Riverbed Technology (RVBD) and PMC Sierra (PMCS) tomorrow and a few others are also out there. One small defense firm we still like is AeroVironment (AVAV) - unfortunately in the quest for 'reflation' or 'technology' stocks this name has sat ignored for a few months as the computers jump in and out of the[More...]

Monsanto (NYSE: MON) Pulls Full Year Earnings Guidance Down

We don't currently own Monsanto (MON) as we exited in early April (Apr 7, 2009: Bookkeeping - Closing Monsanto) just under $80. While the agriculture sector has been exceedingly hot of late, most of the action has been in the "go to" momentum names in fertilizers. This morning Monsanto announced a "sort of" earnings shortfall (guiding to the lower end of a previous range) based on a dramatic drop in Roundup - must be all those consumers flooding into Home Depot (HD) and Lowes (LOW) unaware of the green shoots sprouting around them. Or farmers also unaware of the resurgent US economy. The stock is only down 4% so no big deal, and Monsanto go forward is (in my mind)[More...]

Deere (NYSE: DE) With "Eh" Type Of Report

I don't see anything special out of Hewlett Packard (HPQ) last night except for the fact that 6400 new people are now going to be unemployed... I'm sorry, that's bearish. 6400 more workers soon will be employed by federal agencies and/or Walmart. And this morning we have an "eh" type of report out of Deere (DE). Since agriculture is my favorite long term thesis (i.e. decades) I always keep an eye out on this company as the big kahuna in equipment. I see very little in the way of green shoots - but hey that's <span class="blsp-spelling-error"[More...]

Energy Conversion Devices (ENER) Results And 'Darker Times For Solar Power Industry'

I have a long (and sordid) past with solar power stocks... since I love high growth sectors I jumped into this theme ahead of the pack in latter 2006. In the interim I've missed a lot of opportunities to the upside and lost a lot of money sticking to stocks that I should not of. This is one sector buying "value" stocks has been incorrect and chasing the top valuation (First Solar) has been the only way to survive any buy and hold strategy. In solar, you can lose money holding stocks for 320 days a year but in 9 day periods every so often you can double your money. When the stocks were at their peak of fervor in late 2007 I was early calling for a major consolidation to come in this increasingly commoditized business - this was a very unpopular view at the time to the "herd" as solar stocks were money printing machines for investors for much of[More...]

(8:25am ET) The main focus of traders today will be the 1Q2009 earnings report from JP Morgan (JPM), and the close scrutiny of the data and hype that will follow. After hitting a low of $14.93 in early March, JPM has rallied +118.1% to yesterday’s close of $32.56. There was a high of $34.15 on Tuesday. http://tinyurl.com/da6dcv JP Morgan reported Q1 net income of $2.14 billion, or $0.40/share, down -10% from a year earlier, but beat analysts' expectations. Revenue increased +48% to $25.03 billion. WSJ reported that CEO Jamie Dimon said the firm extended about $150 billion in new credit to consumer and corporate customers during the quarter. With a last hour rally spurred by the real estate investment trusts (REITS) ($DJR +8.7%) and Banks ($BKX +5.1%) in the Financial sector (XLF +4.8%), the US equity[More...]

We are really timing our stories quite perfectly of late - we talked about the pain in solar this weekend, than last night Energy Conversion Devices (ENER) blew up; we wrote about the hype that is "China will lead us back" and how steel companies are jumping the gun based on "hope/thesis" just yesterday (Mar 16: WSJ - Some Steelmakers Jump the Gun in Response to Stimulus)- and lo and behold Nucor (NUE) blows up today. This is the problem you have by investing with the horde that is basing their purchase on nothing other than thesis. When reality strikes, you lose a lot of money in a flash. The big theme you will begin to hear as we move forward this year is the following: "we are looking for less worse than the previous economic report/quarter.... when things start to become less[More...]

One of these days I need to really start making money on the short side in solar; this sector has caused me so much pain on the long side it would only be fitting in terms of karma. We just touched on the troubles in solar this weekend (Mar 14, 2009: NYT: Europe's Way of Encouraging Solar Power Arrives in U.S.) and lo and behold Energy Conversion Devices (ENER) comes out in after hours with a large guide down, and some drastic measures such as consolidation of employment and production lines. Not exactly something you'd expect from the "green energy" job sector of tomorrow - right President Solar? <span[More...]
