Good morning. With chants of "Dow 10K… Dow 10K" once again rising from the streets at the corner of Broad and Wall yesterday, it is easy to believe that the bulls are back on track and that we'll soon be looking at new highs for the stock market. And when reviewing the data inputs to yesterday's 204 point romp, it is also easy to don the Dow10K hat once again and join in on the celebration.[More...]

As a rule, I try not to read too terribly much into a "Fed Day" as there is usually a big batch of volatility that may or may not mean much of anything come the dawn of the next day. Maybe, it's just me. Or maybe there are others that find themselves inclined to simply stand aside and watch the nuttiness from the sidelines on "Fed Days." But in any event, the volatility after a Fed announcement, while fun to watch, may not be telling as to what to expect in the future.[More...]

Data was announced today that demonstrated Salix Pharmaceuticals’ (NASDAQ:SLXP) APRISO™ (mesalamine) 0.375g extended-release capsules had a favorable safety profile in patients in remission from ulcerative colitis (UC) for up to 24 months. APRISO is approved for use up to six months. The majority of treatment-emergent adverse events were mild or moderate in intensity, and were similar to what was seen during the 6-month phase 3 trials.

Salix Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. (NASDAQ:SLXP) today announced the presentation of new data from its Phase III pivotal clinical trial evaluating the efficacy, safety and tolerability of rifaximin - a non-absorbed (<0.4%), gut selective antibiotic - in adult patients with hepatic encephalopathy (HE). These data, presented during two oral sessions at the annual meeting of Digestive Disease Week (DDW) being held this week in Chicago (May 30-June 4, 2009), demonstrated that rifaximin significantly reduced the risk of HE-related hospitalizations in patients with previous episodes of HE and showed a highly significant reduction in the risk of breakthrough HE during the six month study.[More...]
