RadioShack Tunes in Profits By Trimming Costs

Electronics retailer RadioShack (RSH) increased profit by 18%, but shares fell more than 6% in afternoon trading as sales figures were weaker than hoped. This continues to fall in line with the emerging theme of the second quarter earnings results: companies beat earnings estimates in spite of dwindling sales. However, most companies who have beaten EPS estimates in the manner RSH did ($.39 versus estimates of $.28), have been getting a boost instead of a drop in value. RadioShack has exceeded estimates in nine of the last ten quarters, even though sales have been on a steady decline since peaking in 2005. Sometimes investors can glean some clues as to the direction of the US markets and economy based on the market’s perception of Earning Season. Firstly, Bespoke reported last week that the market was entering Earning Season with high expectations (a headwind for the bulls). RSH appears to be a good short setup. Here is the five year chart of RSH. Radio Shack surprised on earnings and saw a jump in price. Barron's notes that the improved earnings will likely disappear soon: RadioShack sold some $70 million in digital television converter electronics, a figure that represented virtually the whole of the outperformance of the sales total. The converters are needed by television viewers who receive over-the-air analog signals, but need a converter box when broadcasters abandon analog and switch to all-digital transmission systems. That initially had been scheduled to take place in February, but the government pushed the transition date back to June 12, so RadioShack has gotten an extra quarter of sales of the products to show for it.[More...]

The Meek Continue To Dominate Equities

Early in April after a month long run off the bottom I posted a list of equities that gained at least 60% in the preceding 4 weeks (Apr 5: The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: 92 Stocks Over $10 Returning 60%+) The list was a whose who of beaten down merchandise. Generally, by week 4-5 of an oversold rally these type of names begin to peter out but the ramp has been relentless in lower quality, low price stocks. My gut tells me quant (and other varieties) of hedge funds have been shorting these names, using fundamental reasons - expecting some pullback after huge runs - only to be run over again and again even in week 6 and 7 of this rally. All it takes nowadays is saying "business has stabilized at the worst levels we've seen in decades" to elicit glee and massive short covering rallies. After today's broad-based decline, I get the sense we are at or near an intermediate top. At the same time, I do not expect the bulls to simply roll over here. Looking at some index charts, we can see that while today's action was undeniably bearish, price has support nearby. WiMax: Clearwire Broadband Service Goes Live in Chicago: Sprint Also to Sell Superfast, Ultramobile Data Service

Nov. 2--After a few false starts, WiMax broadband service arrives in Chicago this week, giving residents access to a technology that promises superfast Internet speeds from any location.
Sprint Nextel Corp. is expected to announce Monday that it has launched 4G in the Chicago area.
"The speed, performance and productivity that 4G gives you are so incredible," said Todd Rowley, Sprint's vice president for 4G.
