RadioShack Tunes in Profits By Trimming Costs

Electronics retailer RadioShack (RSH) increased profit by 18%, but shares fell more than 6% in afternoon trading as sales figures were weaker than hoped. This continues to fall in line with the emerging theme of the second quarter earnings results: companies beat earnings estimates in spite of dwindling sales. However, most companies who have beaten EPS estimates in the manner RSH did ($.39 versus estimates of $.28), have been getting a boost instead of a drop in value. RadioShack has exceeded estimates in nine of the last ten quarters, even though sales have been on a steady decline since peaking in 2005. Sales were down 2.9% from last year, coming in at $965.7 million versus estimates of $978 million. RadioShack offset the declining[More...]

Early Clues From Earnings Season: No All-Clear Yet For Main Street

Sometimes investors can glean some clues as to the direction of the US markets and economy based on the market’s perception of Earning Season. Firstly, Bespoke reported last week that the market was entering Earning Season with high expectations (a headwind for the bulls). Drilling down further, Starmine, which has a relatively good record of forecasting earning surprises, gave the following list of five North American stocks that were likely to beat 2Q Street estimates: Electronic Arts (ERTS), Tyson Foods (TSN), Discover Financial Services (DFS), RadioShack (RSH) and Apple (AAPL).
Radio Shack

RSH appears to be a good short setup. Here is the five year chart of RSH. Radio Shack surprised on earnings and saw a jump in price. Barron's notes that the improved earnings will likely disappear soon: RadioShack sold some $70 million in digital television converter electronics, a figure that represented virtually the whole of the outperformance of the sales total. The converters are needed by television viewers who receive over-the-air analog signals, but need a converter box when broadcasters abandon analog and switch to all-digital transmission systems. That initially had been scheduled to take place in February, but the government pushed the transition date back to June 12, so RadioShack has gotten an extra quarter of sales of the products to show for it.<br[More...]

The Meek Continue To Dominate Equities

Early in April after a month long run off the bottom I posted a list of equities that gained at least 60% in the preceding 4 weeks (Apr 5: The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: 92 Stocks Over $10 Returning 60%+) The list was a whose who of beaten down merchandise. Generally, by week 4-5 of an oversold rally these type of names begin to peter out but the ramp has been relentless in lower quality, low price stocks. My gut tells me quant (and other varieties) of hedge funds have been shorting these names, using fundamental reasons - expecting some pullback after huge runs - only to be run over again and again even in week 6 and 7 of this rally. All it takes nowadays is saying "business has stabilized at the worst levels we've seen in decades" to elicit glee and massive short covering rallies. While the market was flattish last week, I[More...]

After today's broad-based decline, I get the sense we are at or near an intermediate top. At the same time, I do not expect the bulls to simply roll over here. Looking at some index charts, we can see that while today's action was undeniably bearish, price has support nearby. Volume was not particularly high today. - SPY broke down out of a rising wedge on a very slight increase in volume. The 200 day moving average is not far below. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 221px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_08bdwZ8f6Hw/Sez_88bVQ3I/AAAAAAAADB0/BBs7lDFCMno/s400/2009-04-20-spy6mo.png" border="0"[More...]

RadioShack Partners With Seven-Time Tour de France Winner Lance Armstrong to Form New Cycling Team in 2010

RadioShack Corporation is proud to announce a partnership with seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong to form a new American Pro-Tour cycling team. Beginning in 2010, Lance Armstrong will compete for Team RadioShack as a cyclist, runner and triathlete in events around the world, including the 2010 Tour de France.Lance Armstrong returned to the world stage of professional cycling in order to promote the efforts of the LIVESTRONG Foundation and their fight against cancer. From the start of the 2009 season at the Tour Down Under in Australia, Lance's return has generated significant attention and has allowed LIVESTRONG to step up awareness, grassroots action and fundraising in the global fight against cancer. 'This has been a great season so far - the response in the countries we've been to has been amazing and it's clear now that this was the right choice. Utilizing the massive media attention that the sport receives has been the perfect vehicle to help spread the LIVESTRONG message around the world,' said Lance Armstrong. 'To be able to compete for an American team comprised of the world's top cyclists, supported by the best coaches and staff - I couldn't be happier to partner with RadioShack, a truly iconic American brand,' said Armstrong. 'Teaming up with RadioShack makes sense for a number of reasons. For one, it's very appealing to me that they have a huge base of stores throughout the U.S. and Mexico. We have an incredible opportunity to leverage RadioShack's connection to tens of millions of people to spread the LIVESTRONG message,' said Armstrong. 'Also, in cycling, the technology we use on our bikes matters - it allows us to compete at the highest level. It's important to me to partner with a brand that understands the role technology plays in people's lives.''RadioShack keeps people connected in a highly mobile world through innovative technology from leading brands,' said Lee Applbaum, RadioShack's Chief Marketing Officer. 'As one of the greatest athletes of our generation, a father, a cancer survivor, and a tireless advocate in the fight against cancer, Lance Armstrong understands the power of keeping people connected and that's why we feel he's the perfect partner for our brand. ''This is an exciting time at RadioShack,' added Applbaum. 'We are re-launching our brand with a new creative platform in early August, and now having Lance on our team - an American icon who embodies the spirit of mobility, connectivity and philanthropy - really allows us to accelerate our brand's evolution.' RadioShack also plans to activate their 35,000 employees and almost 6,000 stores across the country to raise awareness and funding for the fight against cancer through the Lance Armstrong Foundation and LIVESTRONG. 'We know that cancer research and survivorship is near to the hearts of many of our associates and customers, and together with Lance and his Foundation, we have the power to make a meaningful difference,' said Julian Day, RadioShack's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.RadioShack will also sponsor the LIVESTRONG Foundation's signature fundraising event, the LIVESTRONG Challenge Series, a 5K run/walk and cycling ride held in four cities throughout the United States, providing support for an ongoing, self-sustaining fundraising vehicle to raise money for the fight against cancer.'RadioShack's sponsorship will help spread the spirit of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign and fuel its efforts make cancer a global priority. The cancer community salutes RadioShack's efforts and the investment they are making in support of 28 million people living with this disease,' said Doug Ulman, CEO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation.Wasserman Media Group managed the partnership process on behalf of Capital Sports & Entertainment and Lance Armstrong.About RadioShack CorporationRadioShack Corporation , headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, is one of the nation's most experienced and trusted consumer electronics specialty retailers, offering innovative products and services from leading brands.
