Cash Rich BHP Billiton (BHP) On The Prowl For Mergers

After the proposed mega merger between BHP Billiton (BHP) and Rio Tinto (RTP) fell apart (Nov 8, 2007: Rio Tinto Up ... $103!) , any deal BHP Billiton considers from here will seem "small" by comparison. I am hoping for more of "latch on" acquistions rather than something huge that will weigh on the stock for a period of quarters. There has been some scuttlebutt raised about going after fertilizer assets, specifically potash (which is mined) but as I read about a potential foray into oil & gas that would raise a whole different set of questions.[More...]

The Next Big Thing For ETFs

Well, what I think should be the next biggest thing for the ETF industry anyway... On Squawk Australia on Tuesday morning (Australia time) a company called Fortescue Metals (FMG in Australia and maybe FSUMY on the US pinks) made a lot of news because of contract negotiations with China. If you watch CNBC Asia you might have heard of Fortescue before otherwise probably not. Fortescue is one of a zillion, by my count (ahem), of small or mid cap materials companies out there that are not easily accessed by US based investors. As I say small or mid cap they may not be that small in their own country, for example Yara International (YAR in Norway, YARIY on the pinksheets) has an $8 billion market cap according to the Businessweek quote page which is big for Norway but doesn't make it big enough to make a dent in the iShares Global Materials ETF (MXI) which some clients own. Buying MXI or the similar[More...]

BHP Billiton (BHP) reported today and it is quite an interesting report. This is one of the "big 3" in global mining with their hands in so many subsectors they are a good company to look at in depth to get a gauge of what is happening in their end markets. Considering how bad commodity pricing has been, their earnings report was quite solid (beat estimates of course) and they show tremendous cash flow. I'd expect more acquisitions coming in the year ahead. <img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 247px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vIR9lEpVYYw/SoL5HM4t0-I/AAAAAAAAI-s/PiiDHQPee_s/s400/bhp.png"[More...]
