New Technology Turns Coal Into Clean, High-Powered Gas

A new fuel technology – unveiled just two weeks ago – is about to revolutionize the energy business.
I saw it firsthand.
General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) asked me to present “The Future of Natural Gas” at the company’s Gas Turbine Symposium in Greenville, S.C. That’s where GE revealed a new generation of its market-leading turbine technology.[More...]

China Awakens: Strong Growth Prospects

U.S. President Barack Obama has begun a nine-day tour of Asia at a time when the U.S. economy is struggling to emerge from a deep recession. But nothing looms bigger than China, the largest holder of U.S. debt (around $797.1 billion, up 10% this year), has emerged from the global economic downturn in an ever stronger position. When Obama sets foot in China for the first time, he will confront a dramatically altered balance of power between the two nations.[More...]

After the proposed mega merger between BHP Billiton (BHP) and Rio Tinto (RTP) fell apart (Nov 8, 2007: Rio Tinto Up ... $103!) , any deal BHP Billiton considers from here will seem "small" by comparison. I am hoping for more of "latch on" acquistions rather than something huge that will weigh on the stock for a period of quarters. There has been some scuttlebutt raised about going after fertilizer assets, specifically potash (which is mined) but as I read about a potential foray into oil & gas that would raise a whole different set of questions.[More...]

The Next Big Thing For ETFs

Well, what I think should be the next biggest thing for the ETF industry anyway... On Squawk Australia on Tuesday morning (Australia time) a company called Fortescue Metals (FMG in Australia and maybe FSUMY on the US pinks) made a lot of news because of contract negotiations with China. If you watch CNBC Asia you might have heard of Fortescue before otherwise probably not. Fortescue is one of a zillion, by my count (ahem), of small or mid cap materials companies out there that are not easily accessed by US based investors. As I say small or mid cap they may not be that small in their own country, for example Yara International (YAR in Norway, YARIY on the pinksheets) has an $8 billion market cap according to the Businessweek quote page which is big for Norway but doesn't make it big enough to make a dent in the iShares Global Materials ETF (MXI) which some clients own. Buying MXI or the similar[More...]
