Surviving In The Equity Market – Did Staying Invested Pay Off?

The volatility in equity markets may have subsided for the moment and I won’t make the mistake of calling a bottom, but as bad as this decline turned out to be (to date) developing and implementing a plan has paid off impressively. Staying fully invested is difficult and you have to look no further than the last year to put any investment approach, strategy and philosophy to the ultimate test. With so many investors losing[More...]

The first quarter of 2009 has finished and although equity markets are up from their lows the economic landscape hasn’t changed dramatically for investors or businesses. Unemployment continues to rise, the cost of capital has remained relatively high and transparency in corporate earnings has been inadequate at best. Companies will begin reporting their numbers soon, but with GDP contracting by a significant amount in the past two quarters investors are going to be looking for stability rather than erosion or growth in earnings. Companies with strong defensive balance sheets and cashflows have weathered the storm well so far. Companies suffering from an abundance of debt and poor management have moved in the predictable direction of continued deterioration. After nearly every stock suffering through the decline in equity markets this is an environment of corporate survival. We are in an environment where corporate fundamentals will reign and the strong[More...]

This time around our attention was caught by a financial company, whose CDS was trading at a level which we initially thought had to be a mistake. The company in question is Herndon, Virginia based National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation (corporate ticker NRUC), and the initial reason why we were intrigued by it is that not only was it trading about 800 points tighter than comparable (and since <span[More...]

Investing Opportunities From Tax-Loss Selling

With 2008 in the rear-view mirror I thought readers might be interested in my December investing activities during the perennial tax-loss selling period. What is Tax-Loss Selling? Tax-loss selling (or tax gain/loss harvesting) is a very important tool an investor can use in a taxable investment account to reduce the tax burden (taxes you pay) now and in the future. Because capital gains are taxed, in Canada, at half your marginal tax rate (MTR) there is an incentive for many investors to sell investments at a loss prior to year end in order to crystallize those losses. Say I were to invest equally in two stocks: ABC Inc. & MNO Ltd. During the year the share price of ABC Inc appreciates 50% and I sell all my shares[More...]

I spend a considerable amount of time studying stocks, running screens and enjoyed myself thoroughly throughout this experience as I wanted to see if I could commit an investing strategy from paper to real life and I succeed. Not all my stocks were winners, but I protected myself from losses and took advantage of opportunities when they appeared.Over the past two weeks I have liquidated my holdings in the Value Portfolio even though YTD my return was well above 40%. The simple explanation I can provide is that when I put ego[More...]

There are a lot of investors, friends and family who have recently asked me what they should do in this current environment. It’s easy to say that someone should stick to a certain investing style, stick with quality or maintain their asset allocation and plan. But when you watch your portfolio bleed red week after week and hear such dire perspectives in the media it’s difficult to know if you’re doing the right thing. When I provide unbiased advice to someone I usually try to put it into perspective for them by demonstrating how I apply what I know to suit me best as an investor.
