Editor’s Note: Jim Stanton is attending to some family matters today, so Investment U columnist David Fessler is pinch-hitting for him. And in keeping with Jim’s usual “Sector Watch” theme on Mondays, David focuses on the timber area, explaining why the industry has witnessed a decline over the past 10 years. No matter whether you’re already invested in timber - or thinking about investing in it - you’ll need to know which three REITs to avoid and which one is handling the falling trend better than the rest. David has the answers[More...]

It appears a lot of traders are switching to the short side quickly, so we may get a short squeeze soon. However, I will be adding short into strength. I added some short exposure in the REIT sector today, and will be looking for opportunities to short the financial sector as well, although I am still a bit nervous in the latter case. Here are a few to consider: - PSB: REIT, business parks. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 221px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_08bdwZ8f6Hw/Se3XoipoYQI/AAAAAAAADDc/DjpDvb6ZlSw/s400/2009-04-21-psb1yr.png" border="0"[More...]

Welcome back from the weekend! As the rest of the market returns from the holiday break, we should see more volume and volatility creep back into stocks. Only tomorrow will tell as to whether or not this is a positive or a negative for stock prices. At the moment, futures prices are trading slightly lower. The Dow is off by 44 points, the S&P down 5 points, and the Nasdaq is down 7 points. Crude oil is up another buck, trading at $47.30. As we talk technicals, take a look at a 5 day chart of the mini S&P futures contract. <img src="http://www.tradingaddicts.com/storage/ES0105.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1231126533104" alt=""[More...]

In my previous article I started discussing my dividend growth plan in more detail, by focusing on my stock selection criteria. Today I will be focusing on the diversification part of my plan.Diversification is important, because it generally insures investors up to a certain point that they won’t lose all of their money at the same time. In general it is not a good idea to put all of your eggs in one basket. In terms of diversification, I am trying to own anywhere from 30 to 100 dividend paying stocks, which generate an ever increasing dividend income stream for me. The stocks should fit the criteria which I mentioned in[More...]

Looking to get into the commodity markets, but worried that crude oil, natural gas, coal, and the soft food commodities have gotten ahead of themselves? No need to worry. We have the prefect investment for you - wood. No kidding, wood. And when I say investment, I mean investment. Waiting around for trees to grow is not for active day traders. As reported by IndexUniverse, it turns out that timber investments have outperformed stocks, bonds, and commodities over the long run. In fact, the NCREIF Timberland Index, which is the standard benchmark for this asset class, increased 18.4% last year, versus a 5.5% rise for the S&P 500.
Rayonier Prices Private Placement of $150 Million Senior Exchangeable Notes

Rayonier (NYSE:RYN) today announced pricing of the offering by its wholly owned subsidiary, Rayonier TRS Holdings Inc. ("TRS"), of $150 million aggregate principal amount of senior exchangeable notes due 2015 through an offering to qualified institutional buyers pursuant to Rule 144A under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the “Securities Act”). The notes will bear interest at a rate of 4.50% per year. The notes will be fully and unconditionally guaranteed by Rayonier Inc. ("Rayonier"). The sale of the notes to the initial purchasers is expected to close on August 12, 2009. The notes will be exchangeable into shares of common stock of Rayonier under certain circumstances based on an initial exchange rate of 19.9055 shares per $1,000 principal amount of notes, which is equal to an exchange price of approximately $50.24 per share. The initial exchange price represents a premium of approximately 22.5% relative to the last reported sale price of Rayonier's common shares on the New York Stock Exchange on August 6, 2009. Upon exchange, holders of notes will receive cash up to the principal amount, and any excess exchange value will be delivered, at Rayonier's election, in cash or Rayonier's common shares. TRS also granted the initial purchasers a 13-day option to purchase up to an additional $22.5 million aggregate principal amount of notes.[More...]
