In general, we believe it is still a bit early to get involved with non-US bank stocks as the fundamental outlook remains weak -- asset quality will continue to deteriorate as individuals and companies default on loans, and revenues should continue to fall as loan growth falters and investment banking faces a dearth of new business in the face of economic slowing. Consumer job losses and sluggish business conditions are increasing worldwide, which will tend to dampen demand for credit, even assuming banks are capable of lending more. Moreover, these factors will also hurt asset quality and increase losses on the existing "good" loan portfolios, even apart from considerations of toxic assets. Combined with top-line pressure due to weakening economic conditions, non-US banks face a daunting outlook. Good setups are few and far between, but I managed to find a few I like. I am approaching with care, considering the distinct possibility of a strong counter-trend rally.- PTNR is sitting under resistance after a high volume drop earlier in the month.- MTH: Meritage Homes hit a low of 7.04 in January, and closed at 23.65 yesterday. I am considering buying puts.

SANTIAGO, Chile, July 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Banco Santander Chile (NYSE: SAN; SSE: Bsantander) announced today its unaudited results for the second quarter of 2009.
In 2Q09, net income attributable to shareholders totaled Ch$107,391 million (Ch$0.57 per share and US$1.12/ADR).
These results represent an increase of 40.1% compared to 1Q09 (from now on QoQ) and 4.1% compared to restated 2Q08 figures (from now on YoY).

Sanofi-aventis to Acquire Merck's Interest in Merial

Sanofi-aventis (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY) and Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE: MRK) today announced that the companies have signed a definitive agreement under which Merck will sell its 50 percent interest in the companies' current animal health joint venture, Merial Limited (Merial), to sanofi-aventis for $4 billion (US) in cash. Formed in 1997, Merial is a leading animal health company that is a 50/50 joint venture between Merck and sanofi-aventis.
