When we recently found out what Zacks senior consumer technology industry analyst Ian Gilson, PhD, CFA thought about the overall outlook within his stock coverage, we were able to find a couple Buy recommendations ? but also a couple of Sells. Are you retaining a less-than-sunny stance on consumer electronics stocks? Why or why not? On a worldwide basis, it is likely that lower economic growth and increasing unemployment will reduce consumer spending beyond that of lower house sales and lower auto sales. Sanmina-SCI Corporation (SANM) is currently struggling with an industry-wide weakness and challenging end-market demand. After exiting its PC business, Sanmina has focused on its core business and margin improvement. Although, Sanmina has reduced its cost structure, topline growth is sluggish and we believe the company will struggle to grow again in 2009 as well. However, we would like to see sustained growth before becoming more positive on the stock. Given a weak and uncertain economic environment, we maintain a Sell recommendation on SANM shares. Sanmina-SCI Corporation (SANM) provides end-to-end electronic manufacturing services (EMS) including product design, engineering, testing, volume production of systems, components, and subassemblies, as well as after-market services and support. The company has shown some growth in its core EMS segment and has a reduced cost structure. But it is currently struggling with industry-wide weakness. After exiting its PC business, Sanmina will focus on its core business and margin improvement. Sanmina-SCI Corporation's shares are currently trading at 11.5x our 2008 EPS estimate of $0.14. On a P/S multiple, the stock is trading at 0.1x our 2008 revenue/share estimate of $15.26. This P/E multiple is below the industry averages, but in line with some of its closest peers. Mar. 25--Dec. 9 began like any other Tuesday for Connie Schlim.
She and her husband, Clyde Schlim, reported to work at 5 a.m. at Scotchman Industries, a small manufacturing company in Philip, S.D.Five minutes later, a supervisor told Connie Schlim that Dec. 9 would be her last day at Scotchman after 11 years.
Clyde Schlim, 59, whose only job after high school had been at Scotchman, was let go a month later, though he left with an early-retirement package.
