Consumer Tech With Few Paths To Success

When we recently found out what Zacks senior consumer technology industry analyst Ian Gilson, PhD, CFA thought about the overall outlook within his stock coverage, we were able to find a couple Buy recommendations ? but also a couple of Sells. Are you retaining a less-than-sunny stance on consumer electronics stocks? Why or why not? On a worldwide basis, it is likely that lower economic growth and increasing unemployment will reduce consumer spending beyond that of lower house sales and lower auto sales. This is likely to extend into the consumer electronics markets. Haven't the large pullbacks created some compelling valuations, however? The U.S. stock market has lost five years of growth. Valuations have dropped in line with the decline in prices. Although there are[More...]

Sanmina-SCI Dwindling Away - Analyst Blog

Sanmina-SCI Corporation (SANM) is currently struggling with an industry-wide weakness and challenging end-market demand. After exiting its PC business, Sanmina has focused on its core business and margin improvement. Although, Sanmina has reduced its cost structure, topline growth is sluggish and we believe the company will struggle to grow again in 2009 as well. However, we would like to see sustained growth before becoming more positive on the stock. Given a weak and uncertain economic environment, we maintain a Sell recommendation on SANM shares. We lowered our six month price target to $0.50, given the company's gloomy outlook.
Sanmina-SCI Corporation (SANM) provides end-to-end electronic manufacturing services (EMS) including product design, engineering, testing, volume production of systems, components, and subassemblies, as well as after-market services and support. The company has shown some growth in its core EMS segment and has a reduced cost structure. But it is currently struggling with industry-wide weakness. After exiting its PC business, Sanmina will focus on its core business and margin improvement. Sanmina-SCI Corporation's shares are currently trading at 11.5x our 2008 EPS estimate of $0.14. On a P/S multiple, the stock is trading at 0.1x our 2008 revenue/share estimate of $15.26. This P/E multiple is below the industry averages, but in line with some of its closest peers. Sanmina targets operating margin of 4% with a double digit gross margin growth.[More...]

Dec. 15--California-based semiconductor manufacturer Atmel Corp. laid off 245 employees Monday at its Colorado Springs plant and will close for 11 days starting Dec. 24 as part of a companywide restructuring program.

The layoff is the largest since 2001 at the local plant, which employed about 1,700 before the cutback, and the largest at any local employer since Sanmina-SCI Corp. laid off 319 employees when it closed a Fountain electronics plant at the end of last year.

Atmel said the layoffs affected 11 percent of the company's 6,800 employees worldwide and cost it $4 million in severance costs but will save $18 million a year subsequently.

NI Technology Previews Earnings for Apple, SanDisk, Qualcomm, Intersil and Sanmina-SCI

Next Inning Technology Research , an online investment newsletter focused on semiconductor and technology stocks, announced it has updated outlooks for Apple , SanDisk , Qualcomm , Intersil , and Sanmina-SCI .Editor Paul McWilliams has helped his subscribers generate huge returns on undervalued tech stocks in 2009. Out of the 80 stocks highlighted in his Undervalued Tech Stocks reports, 21 have produced returns in excess of 70% year to date. All of these were ranked as either good 'strategic' or 'speculative' buys. The average return for all stocks ranked as either 'speculative' or 'strategic' buys was 40.7%, better than twice the return of stocks he thought readers should avoid. McWilliams now turns his attention to earnings season. In an exclusive series of reports, McWilliams offers data, charts, and analysis that illustrate important tech paradigms and highlight important trends that will move stocks during the upcoming quarter. To read McWilliams' reports that are designed to prepare investors for the July earnings season, please accept our invitation to take a free 21-day, no risk test drive with Next Inning by visiting the following link: https://www.nextinning.com/subscribe/index.php?refer=prn851 McWilliams covers these topics and more in his earnings preview:-- Why might billions of dollars in profit not be properly reflected in analysts' earnings estimates for Apple? Does Apple's projected earnings power support its current price above $150?-- The price of SanDisk has more than doubled since McWilliams advised readers it was a buy in December. Does he think this is just the start, or is it time to take some profits?-- In December, McWilliams alerted investors that Qualcomm was trading at a rare "bargain" price. The stock has since moved up by 30%. What is McWilliams' target price for the stock and at what price would he recommend adding shares of the stock?-- Is Intersil capable of building a more durable business model without resorting to an acquisition strategy? What is McWilliams' near-term price target for the stock?-- Since telling investors to avoid Sanmina in December, the stock has dropped by 15%, even as many other tech stocks have moved solidly higher. Following this drop, should investors view Sanmina more favorably? After selling off assets, has Sanmina become more or less likely to be a target of consolidation in the coming months?Founded in September 2002, Next Inning's model portfolio has returned 185% since its inception versus 5% for the S&P 500.
