Immucor, Inc. (BLUD) continues to progress in the development of another version of the Galileo. The company's strong earnings growth has been driven by double-digit sales escalation, gross margin expansion, and operating cost control. The additional worldwide placements of Galileo continue to help drive Immucor's growth. Instrument placements are expected to be further driven by the successful launch of Echo. The company is under pressure from the Echo launch but gross margins are expected to regain momentum from the eventual growth in reagent sales, manufacturing efficiencies, and price increases. Although dilutive during development of the technology, the pending acquisition of BioArray Solutions is expected to transform BLUD into a leader in molecular diagnostic systems for blood transfusions. “Streetwise” section out saying that United Rentals (URI) is the kind of co that would be hurt by a recession. The stock has collapsed to around 16. Though much of that derives from the dissolution of a proposed buyout of UR by Cerberus Capital Magmt, the stock is down to ‘03 levels. What's odd is that even though analysts have cut ‘08 EPS ests, UR recently announced preliminary ‘08 guidance of $2.80-3.00. That's based on rental rev growth of 3%, to $2.71bn, and margin improvement that is more than double '07's rise. In a recession, that guidance may prove optimistic, but UR has $2 a share in cash, a decent balance sheet, and trades at a P/E of less than 6x. If its earnings were to fall 50%, it would trade at a P/E around 12. Short of a nasty recession, UR's stock drop may present a long-term opportunity.[More...]

Shutterfly (NASDAQ:SFLY): Stock defended at two firms; expecting a bounce

We have at least two firms out defending Shutterfly (NASDAQ:SFLY) after its shares were down yesterday by 17% on news that Snapfish, a Shutterfly competitor, lowered its pricing on 4x6 prints from $0.12 to $0.09 or by 25%.- Piper Jaffray notes that 4x6 print pricing has been stable for the last two years with Shutterfly, Kodak and Snapfish each charging $0.19, $0.15 and $0.12, respectively. A recent e-mail from Eastman Kodak Co. didn't lead to a Kodak moment for Vanessa Daniele.
On May 16, the company's Kodak Gallery online photo service will delete her picture albums unless she spends at least $4.99 by then and every year thereafter on prints and other products.
"I don't ever think it's a good idea to change terms of service on customers after they've signed up, and demand a new storage fee or threaten deletion of photos," said Daniele, 26, who lives in Chicago.
