54 Stocks Returning 15%+ in January

As we exit the worst January ever, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the best performers of the past month. Before we do, courtesy of Dshort.com this is a chart that has been passed around a lot in the investing community so I thought I'd share it. Two ways to read this - of the 4 great bear markets the past 100 years, 3 "ended" roughly where we are now... about a 50% loss in value from peak. That's the bullish view i.e. "can't get worse than this" and if we fall to S&P 750 (November lows) but never break through they will be correct. The bearish view is - the 4th bear market ended in a 90% drop, and if you plot the velocity of the decline, what happened to us in Sep - Nov caused us to be in lockstep with the worst of the 4. I'm not calling for a 90% drop[More...]

From the government that brought you $1,000 toilet seats and $500 hammers comes the "Great Economic Stimulus Boondoggle of 2009". Okay, while it might be an appropriate title, that's not what it is called. President-Elect Obama's stimulus plan is actually called the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan." In my article last week, I brought up the distinct parallels to Ayn Rand's book Atlas Shrugged and what is happening in the financial and political world today. In a Wall Street Journal article highlighting these startling similarities, Stephen Moore tells how Rand pilloried various acts of government futility and their "benevolent-sounding titles". There is the: "Anti-Greed Act" which[More...]

Before we begin, let's explain the contrarian stance that makes Schaeffer's so unique.
Shaw Group - Exactly Why I Don't Play the 'Earnings Game'

The favorite game on Wall Street seems to be "the earnings game" - aka pure gambling. Roll heavily into a stock ahead of earnings, roll the dice, and hope it comes up your way. Shaw Group (SGR) - one of the Obama infrastructure stocks - had earnings yesterday and put on a huge gain off of earnings that were non too impressive. But... they pumped up their prospects of getting US taxdollars from New Deal 2.0 and the Street loved it. It's so very random, but this is the casino we play in. <img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px;[More...]

Investors Business Daily chimes in on the man with the golden touch.... While the massive economic stimulus plan proposed by President-elect Obama should be a boon to engineering and construction stocks, how big of a boon won't be known until more details are trotted out -- or, for that matter, any details.
