Potential Short Setups

The darn REITs are in free fall and there is no let up, same for Capital One (COF), same for the newspapers, same for the casinos, most retailers.... and we apparently missed the most recent chance at Harley Davidson (HOG) Here are some of the names I am considering... Signet Jewelers (SIG) which we've been discussing for a while here - another consumer play; the main issue for my purposes is lack of volume - only 200K a day which makes it hard for me to get in and out of. But it's now bounced to resistance. If this one worked out it could fall to that gap at $6.25 <img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;[More...]

Pondering Signet Jewelers As A Short

Since I missed Zale's (ZLC) journey to sub $1-ish (Jan 23: Where You Won't Shop in 2009), I am pondering Signet Jewelers (SIG) as a proxy. Very weird action today - it is up 14% based on a cost cutting report that happened yesterday - but the report happened in the morning. So the stock did not react yesterday but reacted today. (I assume short covering today) Signet Jewelers (<a[More...]

Tiffany’s U.S. Customers Battening Down the Hatches

High-end jeweler Tiffany & Co. (TIF) had been fairly recession-resistant through the first three-quarters of 2008 and its stock rose from its January low of $34 per share to nearly $50 in the summer. Even with growing signs that the economy was slowing and that retail might struggle for the next few quarters, Tiffany’s continued to top expectations in each of the last four quarters. The iconic company tested the theory that in hard economic times, high-end retailers are more insulated from the downturn, because their affluent customers still have disposable income. The real trouble for TIF started in October, as the economy took a turn for the worse. As Wall Street was imploding and the stock market had one of its worst months[More...]

Swelling Ranks of Sellers

One feature that defines a deflationary downturn is the expanding array of sellers. You don't just have the usual crowd who are looking to make a profit or to get rid of something they already own so they can buy something else. You also see more and more individuals and firms who have to sell because they don't have enough cash on hand to meet their needs; lenders who end up with something they don't want because borrowers have defaulted on their obligations; people who are worried about their job prospects or other concerns who want to be more liquid; and others who simply get caught up in the spirit of the times. In "Rising Retailer Threat: Liquidations," the Wall Street Journal shines the light on one group whose ranks are destined to swell dramatically in the months and years[More...]
