Looking at tons of charts this weekend, there is similar patterns on various charts. The majority of stocks have declined the past 3 days and are nearing support of their previous break out highs. The patterns look to SPX as it has the potential to move to test its August highs, but has resistance above it from its breakout highs which it broke below.[More...]

More Cash, Less Debt = Stock Market Gains?

Today there were a couple of posts about how tech stocks are currently especially attractive because they hold plenty of cash and tend to have little debt. Paul Kedrosky initially caught my eye with his post "Tech Cash is King" which in turn pointed me to a story on Bloomberg by Eric Martin. I ran a screen tonight that looked at both cash and debt. Specifically, I screened for a Price-to-Cash ratio under three, a Debt-to-Equity ratio under three and a Market Cap greater than $2.5 million. Based on these criteria, I obtained a list of 136 stocks. Judging from our list, it is absolutely true that many tech stocks do seem to have lots of cash and little debt. New Lows for the Bear Market! By Harry Boxer, The Technical Trader (www.thetechtrader.com) It was an extremely negative session and close for the market indices today. The day started out with a gap down, followed by an attempt to bounce early on. They rolled over and went lower all morning, backed and filled mid-day, rolled over in the afternoon again, made lower lows, and had a late sharp rally that just couldn?t hold. That was followed by a drop to new lows for the entire move on the S&P 500 and Dow. Net on the day, the Dow closed under 6600 to 6594.44, down 281.40 today. The S&P 500 fell 30.32 to close at 682.55, and the Nasdaq 100, which got as low as 1072.51, equaling Tuesday's lows, but holding them closed down 35.78 to 1074.52, just a couple points away from the session lows. Disappointing Close By Harry Boxer, The Technical Trader (www.thetechtrader.com) The market was mixed at the close, but the indices certainly disappointed with a late afternoon sell-off, taking the indices from the plus column into the negative column, except for the Nasdaq 100. The day started out with a gap up. They didn't make much headway, as they immediately consolidated, rolled over and made new lows for the entire 4-week decline, with the NDX getting down to 1072 and change, and S&P 500 getting to as low as 692 and change. Then they bounced around, started a mid-day rally, and in the afternoon surged to new session highs on the Nasdaq 100 but could not confirm on the S&P. Back-and-Fill Session Has Disappointing Close By Harry Boxer, The Technical Trader (www.thetechtrader.com) The stock market indices ended the week on a down note, but they certainly had some volatility. Initially, the markets sold off from the opening on Friday, held support, and then bounced to new rally highs, reaching 1250 NDX and 840 SPX. But that was right at important secondary resistance. They failed to get through, and then had an orderly 5-wave decline that lasted until mid-day. Just before lunch hour the indices reached support and bounced sharply to retest the highs but fell short, pulled back again late afternoon, bounced in the last hour but again couldn't get through and in the last 5 minutes sold off quite sharply, with the NDX dropping 8 points and the S&P 500 more than 6 points. Sigma Designs: Sigma To Retain 100% Of Microsoft IPTV Service Platform (Actionable Call Alert) - BWS Financial

BWS Financial is out with an Actionable Call on Sigma Designs (NASDAQ:SIGM) saying the co would retain 100 percent market share position in Microsoft (MSFT) platform IPTV service since the firm learned Motorola (MOT) could delay field trials of second generation set-top boxes until the fourth quarter 2009, and for commercialization not to occur until first quarter 2010. The comments were made to BWS analysts by a MOT representative during the Consumer Electronics Show (“CES”) in Las Vegas. While MSFT seemed more excited of the service being available via Xbox 360, and Broadcom (BRCM) only commenting that the program “remained on track”.
