Main Points

EURUSD ST– The volatile consolidation continues.Clear signs of tiredness, but won’t actively look for a broader downside correction until (if) 55-dma at 1.4767 breaks on a close basis.

USD Index– Same respect of 55-dma, particularly with the USD –ve seasonals. A close above the 55-dma needed to call for a broader turn, stands at 76.15, if achieved would be serious.

Gold– Consolidates against the highs. Broader position squaring may cause it to correct but should be very much a buy on the dip.[More...]

Biggest Declines Among S&P

The following is a list of the S&P 500 firms where the analysts have been cutting their expectations for the current fiscal year the most over the last month. Most likely these firms reported disappointing earnings or gave negative guidance on their conference calls. Historically, you have not wanted to be invested in companies where the analysts who follow them most closely see the earnings prospects diminishing. Also, estimates in motion tend to remain in motion. The first bit of bad news is rarely the last (the cockroach theory). This means that the current expectations, even though down from last month, are probably still to high for these firms. To weed out anomalies, only those firms that are currently expected to earn more than $0.50 in 2009 are included and only those firms where there are a minimum of three estimates in the system. If you have these stocks in your portfolio, you might want to reconsider[More...]

Smith International, Inc. (SII) – a major oilfield services provider – reported financial results for the second quarter 2009 on Jul y27, 2009. Earnings per share, excluding one-time items, came in at $0.15, below our estimate of $0.21 and the Street’s estimate of $0.22. On a year-over-year basis, Smith’s adjusted earnings per share plunged 83.5%, while revenue declined 22.1% to $1.9 billion. ? The Houston-based company’s weaker-than-expected results were due to the collapse in North American natural gas drilling activity that has led to lower volumes and a very competitive pricing environment. ? Geographic Performance On a geographic basis, revenue in North America decreased 29.9% year-over-year to $906.1 million.
Normally when searching for buy ideas, AFG narrows its list of potential investment opportunities using several powerful proprietary variables including valuation, economic margin, management quality, earnings quality and others. Using AFG’s valuation variable (value score) as a stand-alone screen, ValueExpectations has shown portfolios that have gone on to earn outstanding returns. We first posted a blog “High Value Score Stocks: S&P 500” in December of 2008 using only AFG's valuation variable - Value Score. These companies (DDS, S, NOV, MTW, SII, WFR, CHK) were identified as having the highest value score within the entire index. Since release, that portfolio has outpaced the S&P 500 by over 71% as of May 26, 2009.

When oil and gas prices are high, technology obviously plays a key role in helping find and produce the energy necessary to fuel growing global economies.

One of the most important developments in this area, which is highlighted in this publication, has been the development of highly sophisticated dynamic models of the total drilling system using finite element analysis of the BHA elements and precise detail of the drill bit/ formation interface.

Another important element of optimizing drilling efficiency and controlling costs is avoiding drilling surprises that can result in increases in non-productive time.
