As S&P 500 earnings have started their collapse (see articles here and here), there has been a debate about whether this market constitutes good value. From a bottom up basis, however, I am seeing values that I haven’t seen in a long time. Screening on net-net working capital Using the free data from the Yahoo! finance website, I wrote a program that screened an investment universe that is roughly equivalent to the Russell 3000 members. The test is: stocks that trade below net-net working capital (current assets less all liabilities and preferred) and has positive trailing 12 month earnings. The net-net working capital requirement is a classic[More...]

Skechers Keeps Its Foot-hold - Analyst Blog

Skechers USA (SKX), based in Manhattan Beach, California, makes a diverse range of footwear for men, women and children. The company reported disappointing results for the third quarter. Sales missed our estimate by $12 million. EPS beat our estimate by $0.06, but the upside was due to a tax benefit of $0.22. What's more, the company's fourth-quarter guidance came in below our previous estimates of $323 million in sales and EPS of $0.28. Economic conditions continue to worsen, and that is pressuring consumer spending and negatively affecting Skechers' results. As a result, we are reducing our estimates for 2008 and 2009. Longer term, the company's diverse portfolio of brands, international growth opportunities, and retail store expansion should bode well for its stock price. Still, its near-term upside will be[More...]

Inflation Looks High, But May Have Peaked

The market opened under a bit of pressure, after the most recent inflation report sparked concerns about the economy. But inflation is a lagging indicator, and with economic growth slowing around the globe, and energy prices coming down well off their highs, it is likely that inflation has peaked for the time being. As this realization set in, the market has bounced back, and the Nasdaq is up nearly +1.0% currently. Homebuilders and bank stocks are leading the way, while energy shares are lower after profit taking from the recent rally. The July CPI index climbed +5.6% yr/yr, but when you exclude food and energy, the core CPI rose +2.5% yr/yr, still higher than the consensus of +2.4%.<br[More...]
