Bloomberg had this article out about how the U.S. housing market lost $3.3 trillion in 2008 AND that 1 in 6 people with mortgages are underwater, or 17%. It's not getting any better. We have pending home sales coming out today at 10:00AM - consensus 82.3 (range: 78.2 to 84, previous actual: 82.3). I'll be really surprised if pending sales remained "unchanged". Motor vehicle sales are also coming out (total consensus: 7.7M (range:7.3M to 8.1M, previous actual: 7.7M). This is another consensus estimate where it is also "unchanged". Whatever. May 8--Jackson County residents are again feeling the impact of financial troubles confronting the nation's automakers.
Cummins Inc. said Thursday it will lay off about 50 workers at its Cummins Industrial Center in Seymour and temporarily close its Columbus MidRange Engine Plant at Walesboro, idling about 610 hourly workers.
Layoffs at CIC will be effective June 1, Mark Land of Cummins' information office said.

(Nasdaq:SLGN), a leading supplier of consumer goods packaging products, today reported second quarter 2009 net income of $33.7 million, or $0.88 per diluted share, as compared to second quarter 2008 net income of $33.3 million, or $0.87 per diluted share. Results for 2009 included a pre-tax charge of $0.7 million, or $0.01 per diluted share net of tax, for the loss on early extinguishment of debt related to the issuance of $250 million aggregate principal amount of 7.25% senior notes in May 2009. Results for 2008 included pre-tax rationalization charges of $2.7 million, or $0.05 per diluted share net of tax. Silgan Announces Agreement to Sell $250 Million of Senior Notes

Silgan Holdings Inc. (Nasdaq:SLGN), a leading supplier of consumer goods packaging products, today announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell $250 million aggregate principal amount of 7.25% senior unsecured notes maturing in 2016 pursuant to its previously announced offering.
The net proceeds from the offering will be utilized by the Company to prepay the 2009 term loan installment payments and most of the 2010 term loan installment payments due under its senior secured credit facility.
As a result of the issuance of the 7.25% senior notes and the use of the net proceeds therefrom to prepay term loans, the Company expects to incur incremental second quarter 2009 interest and other debt expense of approximately $2.7 million, or $0.04 per diluted share, and incremental full year 2009 interest and other debt expense of approximately $9.9 million, or $0.16 per diluted share.
