I've always been a fan of what are now called "alternative investments" and never really cared as much for "generic index style equities", although I have owned them of course. Property, commodities, gold and higher yield instruments were always more interesting to me once I began to understand how imbedded inflation really was in the modern world. Now that I am retired and living on my money, my "business" is to generate income as a goal more important than capital gains. Increasingly I am working on the great divide between tax-deferred and taxable accounts in the US, now and for the future. Perhaps we should call them "totally taxable" and "partly taxable" accounts since every penny one takes out of the IRA or 401K is taxable while only gains and dividends and interest are taxable from the taxable accounts. Before you ask the inevitable question “Have you lost your mind?” let me reveal the “method of my madness”. There are a growing number of people including some level-headed analysts who have publicly wondered whether it was possible that the private ownership of physical gold might be outlawed in the United States. Many would say that the likelihood of that in the land of democracy and The Constitution is virtually zero. That is what I’d like to believe as well, especially if I were more “historically naive”. But, history does tell us that the US government, in the days of a fixed gold price, did intervene in a very direct manner with President F.D. Roosevelt banning the “hoarding of gold coin, gold bullion, and gold certificates” and thus forcing US citizens to sell to Federal Reserve at $20 an ounce. Barrick Gold to eliminate hedges, plans offer

TORONTO - Barrick Gold Corp., the world's biggest gold producer, said Tuesday it plans to eliminate all of its gold hedges and raise $3 billion in a share offering to help pay for the move.
Gold hedges are futures contracts that commit a company to selling the metal at set prices.
Barrick's decision to pay off its hedges amounts to a bet that gold prices will keep rising.

Barrick sells production stake to Silver Wheaton

DENVER - Barrick Gold Corp., the world's biggest gold producer, on Tuesday agreed to sell silver reserves from four of its mines to Silver Wheaton Corp. in a deal worth $625 million.
The transaction will provide Toronto-based Barrick with a source of financing for its Pascua-Lama mining project which is under construction on the border between Argentina and Chile while it significantly boosts the size of the 5-year-old Silver Wheaton.
Until Pascua-Lama begins production sometime in 2014, Silver Wheaton will receive 100 percent of silver produced at three other Barrick mines, two in north-central Peru and a third in the San Juan province of Argentina.

Barrick Closes Silver Sale Transaction

Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE: ABX)(TSX: ABX) announced today that it has closed its transaction with Silver Wheaton Corp. (NYSE: SLW)(TSX: SLW), previously announced on September 8, 2009, to sell the equivalent of 25% of the life-of-mine silver production from the Pascua-Lama project and the equivalent of 100% of silver production from the Lagunas Norte, Pierina and Veladero mines until project completion at Pascua-Lama.
Silver Wheaton will also make additional cash payments for each ounce of silver delivered by Barrick under the arrangement.
