The indices followed through on yesterday’s late comeback rally and gapped up strongly early on, backed off and retested the gap successfully, and then came on and rallied strongly into the mid-afternoon before a last 90-minute rollover brought them off the highs. Still net on the day the Dow was up 126.74 at 10,471,58, the S&P 500 up 13.23 to 1108.86, and the Nasdaq 100 up 20.28 at 1787.71.[More...]

Support Holds As Indices Eek Out More Gains

The markets managed to eek out another gain today, although they had a rough road. Despite the early big gap-up and strong surge that took them to new 2009 highs, taking out the October highs on both indices, they reversed sharply lower, bounced and then came down and made lower lows, but only slightly, and couldn’t follow-through to the downside in mid-afternoon when they hit their session lows. The indices had a huge rally today, gapping up sharply at the opening, running hard in the morning, and then working their way steadily higher in a rising channel all session. Indices Barely Salvage Gains In Volatile FOMC Announcement Session

The indices ended a bit positive on FOMC announcement day, but there were some wild gyrations in between. They gapped up at the opening, backed off, and then ran hard in the morning, reaching over 1700 on the Nasdaq 100 and just above 1060 on the S&P 500. Those were key resistance levels. At that point they drifted lower in a corrective looking pattern until the FOMC announcement, but shortly afterward had some wild gyrations, including a sharp drop and then a sharp rally back. At that point it looked like the rally might take out the early morning highs, but they stalled right at them and rolled over hard into the close, giving back most of the gains, but still managed to close a bit positive on the day.[More...]

The indices ended mixed at the end – but it was a pretty interesting day. There was a lot of back and forth vacillation and volatility in the morning, but they failed to break them down below 1660 NDX and 1035 SPX.[More...]

Rally Refuses To Give Way

We certainly had another up-day, but it all came in the last 20 minutes or so. The market opened lower in the morning, rallied steadily until mid-day to new highs, getting up to 1007 on the S&P 500. The indices then rolled over, but the SPX managed to hold 1000 three times in the afternoon, while the NDX also held support around the 1618 area, near the morning lows. A last 20-minute short-covering frenzy took the market up sharply and they closed in the plus column. Net on the day the Dow closed up 33.63 to 9320.19, the S&P 500 up 3.02 to 1005.65, and the Nasdaq 100 up just 0.37 at 1628.49. However, that was 12 points off its low. Advance-declines were 3 to 2 positive on New York and about 4 to 3 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was better than 2 to 1 positive on New York on total volume of 1 1/4 billion. Nov. 4--Best Buy is planting its flag in the growing market for online movies in a big way, banking that giving consumers access to on-demand downloads will help counter shrinking sales of DVDs.
The Richfield-based retailer said Tuesday it is teaming with Roxio CinemaNow to launch a movie download service that will let consumers pipe Hollywood hits into any device sold by Best Buy that connects to the Internet -- TV sets, portable media players, computers, Blu-ray DVD players and mobile phones.
Once available, consumers will be able to buy or view more than 20,000 of CinemaNow's movie and television titles.
