Technically Significant Day As Indices Make Large Gains

The indices started the week with a bang and ended with big gains on the day. The session started out with a big gap to the upside. They ran very sharply higher and hard early on, eased into a lower angle of ascent, but continued higher all morning, backed and filled mid-day, and reached their mid-day and session peaks with about 3 hours to go. Then they rolled over to do a serious test in late afternoon that held at 1470 NDX and 940 SPX. The last hour saw a sharp snapback towards the session highs, and then they pulled back a little into the close. Net on the day the Dow was up 221.11 at 8721.44, the S&P 500 up 23.73 at 942.87, and the Nasdaq 100 up 41.55 at 1477.12. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX) had a monster day, up 14.40, nearly 5 percent, at 285.71.
Strong Consumer Confidence Index Boosts Stocks

The indices had a negative start to the week, but that abruptly turned around with a surprisingly strong consumer confidence index reading that squeezed the shorts and exploded the indices. The market ran sharply higher early on, and then settled into a strong rising channel-type pattern that lasted until mid-afternoon. They finally did get about a 2-hour pullback into the last 10-15 minutes, at which point they bounced into the close. Net on the day the Dow was up 196.17 at just over 8473, the S&P 500 up 23.33 to 910.33, and the Nasdaq 100 up 49.44 at 1412.61. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX) advanced 9.31, nearly 3 1/2 percent, at 259.82. The technicals had a huge advantage of advancers over decliners by more than 5 to 1 on New York and 3 1/2 to 1 on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was better than 5 to 1 positive on New York on lighter total volume of about 1 1/3 billion. Nasdaq traded[More...]

Volatile Session Ends Narrowly Mixed

The indices certainly had some volatility on Thursday, up sharply in the morning and down sharply in the afternoon, taking back all of the gains and then some, closing mixed on the indices at the end of the day. The day started out with a big gap up. They ran very sharply in the first half hour to 40 minutes, and then they backed and filled, flagged, and made new highs by mid-morning, and then rolled over, took out support, and went into a 5-wave decline until mid-day when they bounced and did a perfect retracement to resistance that failed, rolled over to new lows, but the S&P 500 held at yesterday?s late lows, and had a very sharp rally until about 10 minutes before the close when they backed off sharply again.
Indices Edge To The Downside

The markets were soft today, ending in the negative column only because of a last-hour decline. The indices were quite volatile in the morning, gapping down, heading lower, taking out support slightly and then rallying sharply back up. They broke out mid-day, with the S&P 500 reaching new session highs by late afternoon with about an hour to go. When the NDX not only did not confirm but failed at the 2-day declining tops line, they then rolled them over fairly hard into the close, closing negative, though just slightly, on the day.
54 Stocks Returning 15%+ in January

As we exit the worst January ever, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the best performers of the past month. Before we do, courtesy of Dshort.com this is a chart that has been passed around a lot in the investing community so I thought I'd share it. Two ways to read this - of the 4 great bear markets the past 100 years, 3 "ended" roughly where we are now... about a 50% loss in value from peak. That's the bullish view i.e. "can't get worse than this" and if we fall to S&P 750 (November lows) but never break through they will be correct. The bearish view is - the 4th bear market ended in a 90% drop, and if you plot the velocity of the decline, what happened to us in Sep - Nov caused us to be in lockstep with the worst of the 4. I'm not calling for a 90% drop[More...]
