On 11/19/09, AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN) announced the submission of a New Drug Application (NDA) to the FDA for ticagrelor, an investigational oral antiplatelet treatment for the reduction of major adverse cardiac events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The proposed trade name for ticagrelor is BRILINTA, pending approval from the FDA. This submission is based on the results of a comprehensive program, including data from PLATO (A Study of Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes), the Phase 3 head-to-head trial comparing ticagrelor plus aspirin with clopidogrel (Plavix) plus aspirin. Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY) signed a letter of intent last Saturday to establish a joint venture with Minsheng Pharmaceutical Group of Hangzhou. The JV will focus on OTC vitamin and mineral products. Minsheng already produces the best selling product in the sector: 21-Super Vita multivitamin-multimineral tablets. For Sanofi-Aventis, the JV will provide an entry into China’s OTC market. Hospira Profits Strong on Improved Efficiencies, Generic Drug Launch

Oct. 27--Hospital products maker Hospira Inc. this morning reported a 42 percent increase in third-quarter profits on strong sales and improved manufacturing efficiencies from an ongoing company-wide reorganization and cost-reduction plan.
That compares to $81.8 million, or 51 cents a share in the year-ago quarter.
Results were also buoyed by the launch of a generic colon cancer treatment the company introduced.

Sep. 1--Drugs giant AstraZeneca was showing the rest of the top 100 companies a clean pair of heels today, spurred on by recommendations from two of the City's biggest players.
UBS has a buy rating on AZ and believes there is still scope for improvement in the shares by raising its target from 3500p to 3600p.
The group also whetted the City's appetite by claiming its new blood thinner pill Bilinta is an improvement on the current market leader Plavix, which is jointly marketed by Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Dec. 6--The staggering loss of more than a half-million payroll jobs in November injected new urgency into calls for a federal stimulus to put Americans back to work.
The U.S. Department of Labor on Friday reported that employers slashed 533,000 payroll jobs last month, and the national unemployment rate jumped to 6.7 percent from 6.5 percent.
It was the fifth-worst job-loss month since World War II, the highest one-month job loss number since December 1974, and a 15-year high in the jobless percentage.

Sanofi-aventis U.S. announced today results of a retrospective real-world cohort study comparing the total direct medical costs of Lovenox or unfractionated heparin for the prevention of venous thromboembolism among at-risk hospitalized medical and surgical patients in the U.S. The study demonstrated VTE prophylaxis with enoxaparin was a cost-saving therapy with a statistically significant average reduction of $1,080 per discharge compared to prophylaxis with UFH.
