Sonic Foundry Looks a Bit Better

Although revenue was slightly below our Q3 estimate, higher-margin service revenue helped Sonic Foundry (SOFO) post a small profit after noncash expenses. Not only was this ahead of our most recent EPS estimate, but it was also better than what we expected entering the year before the Q1 shortfall. We would still like to see the company sustain its revenue run rate and show some operating leverage in fiscal 2009, and therefore maintain conservative estimates. However, we are incrementally more positive on the stock. We maintain a Hold recommendation and $1.00 price target. A number of Sonic Foundry's closest competitors are private, or part of a larger company, making comparable valuation difficult. Trade Ruling Against China May Open Doors for State Firms

Aug. 13--Wisconsin software firms and music publishers could benefit from a trade ruling against China aimed at opening markets in the world's most populous country.
Under the ruling, made public Wednesday, the World Trade Organization largely sided with a U.S. complaint that accused China of making U.S. companies sell copyrighted products such as books, CDs and video games through state-approved or state-run businesses.
The U.S. film industry "won a major victory in its years-long battle to open the Chinese movie market," Dan Glickman, head of the Motion Picture Association of America, said in a statement.

Sonic Foundry Reports Net Loss for Consecutive Quarter

Jul. 31--For the second quarter in a row, Sonic Foundry reported a net loss of less than one cent per share.
Cost-cutting helped Sonic Foundry achieve its results, the company said.
Sonic Foundry chairman and chief executive Rimas Buinevicius said new product sales were hampered by the difficult economy and delays in distributing economic stimulus money for higher education.

Stocks Sink to 12-Year Lows Over Bleak Economic Outlook

Feb. 24--Stocks tumbled Monday to lows not seen for 12 years as pessimism about the economy and corporate profits led more investors to give up on the market and shed their shares.
"I think what's driving the market lower now is the fact that the economy and corporate earnings are falling even faster than stock prices are," said Bruce Bittles, an economist and chief market strategist for Milwaukee's Robert W. Baird & Co.
"There is major stimulus coming into the economy later this year, and we need to fortify these banks and develop a reasonably thought-out plan and then go with it," said Terence V. Pavlic, president and portfolio manager of Pavlic Investment Advisors Inc., Delafield.
