Chart Of The Week: Breaking Down The S&P 500 In Q2

In the 31 weeks since the launch of the chart of the week feature, I have created all the charts with the exception of (I believe) two of them. Going forward, I think it is time to relax this constraint a little and expand the scope of the chart of the week feature to cover a broader range of subjects, bring in a little more visual variety, etc. What better way to usher in an expanded chart of the week feature, but with a heat map of the second quarter performance of the S&P 500, particularly when the 15% gain in the quarter was the best for the index in eleven years. The FINVIZ.com heat map breaks down the quarterly performance at the component level, grouped by sectors and industries, with the size of the squares being proportional to market capitalization and the color codes (and numbers)[More...]

Head And Shoulders And Divergences On Daily SP500

It’s being broadly circulated around the analysis circles, but there appears to be a distinct Head and Shoulders forming on the daily chart of the S&P 500. I’m picking up volume and momentum divergences as well, hinting that lower prices are yet to come but let’s take a look at these structures and what they might mean for traders. With today’s 3% free-fall (Trend Day Down) in the broader stock market, it appears now that the dominant technical pattern is the developing Head and Shoulders on the S&P 500. It’s not guaranteed, of course, but according to classical technical analysis patterns, we would expect the next move in price to be a ‘magnet trade’ down to test key support about the[More...]

2009: Markets Move More Overnight than Ever Before

I am going to post some data from TraderFeed blogspot, run by the very well respected Brett Steenbarger. Readers will know we've been noting some very strange action - after the initial surge in March - we began noticing a lot of the upticks were driven by "the persistent buyer" in premarket. Many days futures were negative overnight (I'd check at midnight) then when I woke in the morning I'd notice they'd be flattish or slightly green. Then they'd run up from 7 AM to 9 AM. And not just on days with economic news. This was happening notoriously throughout April and May... over and over. Who is so insistent on wanting to buy the market via futures... based on no news... and willing to place such sloppy orders that they move the market, rather than placing orders slowly so as to get better prices? Only 1 type of "person" - someone who does <span[More...]

Massive TICK And Breadth Divergence On SPY Intraday

I wanted to share with you something I’m paying particular attention to - the TICK, Breadth, 3-Push Momentum Divergence, and Volume Divergence we’re seeing at these intraday levels in the SPY (and other US Market ETFs). Let’s take a quick look to see what this might mean so that we can be prepared if prices start falling from these levels. Without going into too much detail, take a look at a full, five-wave Elliott fractal move completing on a “Three Push” Negative Momentum Divergence - that’s often all it takes to trigger a ’short sell’ trade and play for a possible trend reversal with a stop placed a decent distance above the highs at $93.00 in the SPY. We’re also seeing a slight volume[More...]

Last Wednesday I remarked that a strong rally to end the week was unlikely. The next day we promptly had a strong rally, which kept index charts in a bullish orientation. At this point, I do not see a great edge in either direction. In my mind, the end-of-quarter window dressing will be a non-issue after tomorrow, and then we'll get a better idea of market direction. We really have some mixed signals here. - SPY got a boost on Thursday, pushing it above the 50 and 200 day moving averages, and maintaining a higher low. One could make exactly the same comment about IWM and QQQQ. <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 212px;"[More...]

S&P 500 Technical Analysis

With exception of Monday, the past week could be considered positive. Yet, by the end of the week the indicators make me somewhat cautious about the further trend. The correction we had from June 12, 2009 until June 23, 2009 could be considered as the strongest down turn since March 9, 2009 (since the market is in the longer-term up-trend). The high levels the indexes hit in the beginning of June became a strong resistance barrier. The Dow Jones Industrials (^DJI) has been fluctuating around the same resistance level for a month (from December 1, 2008 until June 9, 2009). The S&P stuck close to its current resistance in December 2008 as well. Yes, the Nasdaq 100 index is one of the indexes that recovered stronger, but we should remember that the Nasdaq 100 represent non financial companies and was less affected by 2008 stock market crash. So, we may see[More...]

Golden Cross On The S&P 500

There has been a bit of buzz generated by the appearance of the golden cross, where the 50-day moving average crosses the 200-day moving average, experienced by the S&P 500. Be contrarian? Or sheep? The talk is that such golden cross events are bullish for the market. The premise is based on trend following models, which depend on persistence of price trends. <object width="425"[More...]
