5 Smart Management Decisions

There's no question that executives have had their hands full navigating the rocky economic environment of the past year. Although we at Morningstar prefer a quality business over topnotch management--as it is much easier for a company to change management teams than industries--recent events have brought home the point that management decisions can have a dramatic effect on a company's fate.[More...]

15 Stocks Having ATough Quarter But Worth A Look

The S&P 500 ended moved into the green in May and has never looked back. So far in Q3, it's up a whopping 16.8%, even better than Q2's 15.9% total return. Despite the large advance, 40 of the members are actually down QTD. Thinking that there might be some opportunities from the long side, I wanted to take a closer look, so I created a screen in StockVal to narrow the list. Here is how I constrained the group:[More...]

Q2 Growth Report - Part 1

Today's Wall Street Journal had an article that asked the question "Can Rally Run without Revenue?" Is the revenue situation really that bad?

Let's take a quick look at some the data compiled through the Alert HQ process.

After each quarter's earnings season, I try to pull together what I am now calling the Growth Report. Part 1 compiles the list of stocks that have shown a year-over-year increase in both revenue and earnings AND a sequential quarter-over-quarter increase in both revenue and earnings. Given the severity of the economic downturn, very few companies have been able to to pull off this trick.

The following table presents a comparison of the last two quarters:

Earnings Season Is Over - Who Were The Growth Leaders?

Earnings season is pretty much over now. Many companies managed to beat drastically reduced expectations. As a result, many bears focused on poor earnings quality and the fact that the bar had been lowered so far, it was no great accomplishment to exceed expectations. There were a number of stocks, though, that beat fair and square. We compiled a list of stocks that had increased earnings per share sequentially and year-over-year and increased revenues sequentially and year-over-year. We had 218 stocks that made the list. We then cross referenced this list with the S&P 500 and came up with the following list of 27 stocks: SymbolNameAETAETNA[More...]
