Tickers For The Latest Portfolio Reshaping

Fortunately my portfolio management methods don’t revolve around frequent trading. One of my kids came up to me recently and said, “What did you do today, Dad?” I said, “I made one trade, and I did a bunch of research.” He then asked, “How often do you trade?” I answered, “That was my first trade in a week, and I haven’t traded much in the last two months, but that’s not normal. There is no normal for me. When the market is really volatile, I trade a lot more, selling when stocks are rising, and buying when they are selling off. When the market is relatively placid, I don’t do much.” He looked at me, kind of smiled, and moved on. Information overload from Dad.

Most people and investment managers trade too often. They sell their winners too rapidly, and panic too soon on their losers. Now, I’m not advocating “buy and forget,” or Buffett’s statement, “Our favorite holding period is forever.”[More...]

Stocks For An Economic Recovery - Utilities

As the economy begins its comeback, the utilities companies that will benefit the most are the ones whose stock prices have suffered for being located in poor housing markets and those with significant counter-party risk. These companies lack the stability an investor looks for in utilities companies during a time of economic hardship. However, as the economy begins its turn around, these investments will once again become attractive. A company that fits the aforementioned profile is Sempra Energy (SRE: 44.25, -0.57 (-1.27%)), a diversified gas utility company based in Southern California. Sempra has two core utility subsidiaries in Southern California Gas (SoCalGas), the largest gas utility in the United States and[More...]

The economy is in awful shape right now, but it is not in a terminal decline from which it will never recover. We have faced hard times before and always managed to come out stronger on the other side. While I do believe in happy endings, I do not look for one right around the corner. Waiting for the recovery does not mean sitting on your hands and doing nothing. There are things that you can be doing today to help yourself prosper for the long run. Indeed, now may be the best time in your life to make moves that will help you have greater wealth later in life. The stock market almost always turns up before the economy does. Trying to pick the absolute bottom is a fool's game. We are far enough along in the process that it is time to start tiptoeing back into the market. Remember that a bear market is a long term investor's[More...]

Given where the bottom-up analyst forecasts are for the S&P 500 -- currently at about $62.50 for 2009 -- and the rate of decline of the forecasts, it seems likely that the eventual actual earnings for the S&P 500 will be about $50.

First, an admission of guilt - I did think potash was the one commodity with a wide enough economic moat that production/price would not suffer materially in this downturn. Wrong! - well at least half wrong as prices have held up much better than any other commodity on the planet. Potash (POT) announces a 20% cutback in production... now the great irony is if this was announced 4 months ago, or 2 months ago or heck 3 weeks ago the stock would be down 30%. Instead, we get glee and jolly as Obama himself has a potash mine and hence anything Obama touches is gold. And global growth is also "back". Which once again goes to one of my favorite catch phrases - it's not the news, it's the reaction to the news. One could argue less production eventually leads to higher prices, hence this[More...]

Gold - Yearly chart

Once again I find a little bit of peace in the yearly chart which tunes out the hysterical day to day noise. There are horns blowing, leaders yelling 'CHARGE!' while others whimper 'retreat'. The vast and pliable herd whipsaws this way (inflation hysterics of just this past summer) and that (deflation hysterics currently in progress) and sometimes we forget how long certain things take to play out. Time... what a concept. In our little corner we will stick to the 'gold may decline in a deflation impulse but will do so much less than stuff that is positively correlated to economies and human hopes for prosperity' line.
