Yahoo Sells Kelkoo to PE Firm

Yahoo has sold its wholly owned subsidiary Paris-based comparative shopping site, Kelkoo - to a U.K.-based equity firm named Jamplant Limited, a new investment unit created by the founders of price comparison site USwitch, which sold to E.W. Scripps (SSP) for 210 million pounds in fiscal ‘06. Kelkoo was sold for less than 100 million euros ($126 million), according to a TechCrunch report. The Web Portal acquired the online comparison shopping service in March of 2004 for approx. 475 million euros ($579 million) as part of a push to bolster its European operations. However, as the internet giant started last year to re-evaluate its business under the return of Jerry Yang as chief executive ; it quickly reached the conclusion[More...]

Should You Sell After A Dividend Cut?

In a recent report Standard and Poors predicted that dividend growth will slow in 2008 and probably become negative in 2009 as more industries are affected by the current economic slowdown. There were several dividend cuts and eliminations last week. Stocks that cut or eliminate their dividends tend to underperform the S&P 500 over time. It’s interesting to note that investors reacted differently about each occasion where a dividend cut or elimination occured. Carnival Corp (CCL) announced on October 31 that it will suspend its dividend for 2009. The company announced that the dividend suspension would result in annualized cash savings of approximately $1.3 billion.
November 5, 2008: Clean Up When Funds Clear Out

Money managers clean up portfolio holdings before the end of their tax year. Over 48%of US mutual funds close their books between late October and December. Managers sell stocks with large losses to avoid reporting them on their year-end report to shareholders. This causes downward pressure on stocks trading within their portfolio(s)that are at or near 52-week lows. Once the selling subsides, these stocks have historically experienced a price reversal. That said, investors should exercise due diligence before buying any of the companies listed below by analyzing any potential shift in a company's fundamentals and other factors such as sector weight and risk tolerance. Here are the screen parameters used to select the following "sells" from funds: Large-cap and mid-cap stocks trading at or below 30% of their 52-week high and have not bounced above 15% from their 52-week low,and have above-average valuation on both an absolute and[More...]

<ul><li>Newspapers are hurting all over the United States, but the pain is less severe at small publications like The Blackshear Times in Georgia.</li><li>The weekly newspaper fills an information vacuum in a county of 17,000 people who live about 75 miles from the closest metropolitan market, in Jacksonville, Fla. That has made it easier for The Times to hold on to its 3,500 subscribers and keep its revenue stable in a recession that's ravaging much of the newspaper industry.</li><li>"CNN is not coming to my town to cover the news and there aren't a whole lot of bloggers here either," said Robert M.
