Stem cells are a biologic marvel and a political football. Because stem cells never die and they have the ability to evolve into nearly all cell types, they are the leading source of groundbreaking medical advances. For example, researchers hope to transform stem cells into heart cells, which could be injected into heart-attack patients to repair the damage. In the lab, scientists have pulled off virtual miracles with stem cells. Rats with crushed spinal cords are able to walk again after growing new neurons. Mice with diabetes grow new pancreas cells that secrete insulin. Such results have spurred hope in patients with debilitating diseases. Famously, Christopher Reeves, the actor who played Superman, believed stem cells could cure his spinal cord injury, perhaps allowing him to walk again. He died before he got his chance... And we are still at least a[More...]

Whether you’re happy about the latest development from Washington depends on what side of the political aisle you normally sit on, but President Obama’s latest executive decision is causing a stir one way or the other since it involved the controversial usage of embryonic stem cell research. Flashback the length of two presidential terms to the first year of the Bush administration. Prior to that time, federal funding was allowed by law to go towards funding research done with human embryonic stem cells. But in August 2001, then president Bush reversed the decision based on ethical grounds and the conviction that human life started at the moment of conception. Though researchers could still receive funding for already-existing batches of the cells contained within the days-old human embryos, they unsurprisingly weren’t happy with the removal of further financial support. That’s all changed with a reversal of the[More...]

StemCells, Inc. announced this morning that it has received approval from the FDA to begin a clinical trial of the Company’s proprietary HuCNS-SC product candidate (purified human neural stem cells) to treat Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease (PMD), a fatal brain disorder that primarily affects young children. As of today, there are no approved treatments for this disease. According to the press release, this is the Company’s second FDA-approved clinical trial to evaluate HuCNS-SC cells as a potential treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. The first study to be approved was the Company’s Phase I clinical trial of HuCNS-SC cells to treat neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL), or Batten disease. The Phase I NCL trial is predicted to reach completion next month. “PMD is one of the most severe myelin disorders known to man.
Healthcare Investing Trends for 2009

Healthcare investing trends in 2009 and beyond will be affected by the new administration's plans for healthcare reform, which are summarized at the Change.gov website. A key feature of the plan is making health insurance coverage possible for all Americans using the existing network of insurers and providers. The plan relies on tax credits for small businesses and eligible individuals to help pay the cost of health insurance premiums. Also, large employers which do not offer health insurance benefits would be required to contribute a percentage of their payroll toward the cost of healthcare for their employees. Insurance companies would be required to cover pre-existing conditions and the insurance market will be reformed to eliminate anti-competitive practices, including the creation of a National Health Insurance Exchange with a variety of affordable health insurance options.[More...]
