Environmental Group Touts 'Clean' Energy

Oct. 1--BANGOR, Maine -- With wind power, solar energy and even pellet stoves, Mainers are using and developing clean energy solutions to break free from the state's dependence on fossil fuels, people representing the Natural Resources Council of Maine said Wednesday.
The development of renewable energy and more energy-efficient programs and products is in turn creating more jobs in Maine, Dylan Voorhees, clean energy project director for the environmental group, said at a news conference at the Bangor Public Library.
The Natural Resources Council of Maine recently compiled a survey of the state and found that 230 Maine businesses provide home energy audits and weatherization services; 427 install solar and photovoltaic systems; 1,300 provide energy efficient products and services; and more than 300 offer green architecture and engi-neering.

Georgetown, New Albany Talk Sewer Deal Terms: Castlewood Engineer Selected, Work Could Begin in December

Aug. 28--Georgetown and New Albany are working to clarify the language of a new five-year contract regarding sewer service.
Three percent, which could tally 15 percent if Georgetown is still on New Albany's system in five years, isn't a problem, Andrews said.
His concern was that if a rate hike is passed onto New Albany users in the future, Georgetown sewer customers won't have to pay a double increase.

TVA Revises Coal Ash Report, Elevating Risks at Some Sites

Jul. 17--The Tennessee Valley Authority has revised a report to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and is raising from "low" to "high" the potential risk at four coal ash storage impoundment sites.
The sites -- Bull Run and Cumberland in Tennessee, as well as Colbert and Widows Creek in Alabama -- now will be among a list of high-hazard potential impoundments released recently by EPA, according to TVA Chief Operating Officer Bill McCullum.
TVA commissioned Stantec Consulting Services in the wake of an earthen berm collapse in December at Kingston, Tenn. That spill dumped 1.2 billion gallons of toxic, wet coal ash into the Emory River and onto rural residential land.

Yuma Man Wants Subdivision Added to Avenue B and C Colonia Sewer Project

Jun. 17--A planned project to connect several hundred county residents in the area known as the Colonia to city sewer service may be getting even larger.
The owner of approximately 40 acres within the Colonia who originally asked to be excluded from the project has now asked the county to be included, the Yuma City Council was told during its roundtable Tuesday afternoon.
The city's wastewater treatment system has the capacity to receive the sewage effluent from a new subdivision of that size, said City Administrator Mark Watson.

North American design firm Stantec announced second quarter 2009 results today with gross revenue increasing 13.0% to C$388.1 million and net revenue increasing 10.1% to C$318.1 million compared to the second quarter of 2008.
Net income for the quarter was C$22.3 million, and diluted earnings per share were C$0.49.

The firm will be redesigning the West Roxbury Tunnel, a 12,500-foot-long, 84-inch-diameter rock tunnel that has become severely corroded over time.
