Apple’s earnings news couldn’t outweigh the negative earnings from Microsoft. Earnings season is always full of surprises; some good some bad. AAPL was able to blow away earnings on iPod sale, but MSFT disappointed and announced 5,000 in job cuts. The market did not take kindly to the poor MSFT news and subsequently triggered a sell off. Volume rose on the NASDAQ while the NYSE saw volume ease. There is still a contingent to buy the dips, buy cheap stocks, those who buy into this theory continue to be left in the dark. I used to, and will one day return, to posting the best performing stocks of the week - but the wicked volatility and "student body left" trading of the past 4 months has made it a moot point. Everything must either be bought or sold, as stocks are either deemed "good" or "bad" that hour, day, or month. The herd piles in, or piles out - regardless of sector, style, fundamentals. It's been a market of asset allocation not individual stocks much of the back half of the year. I like to look for relative strength and ride sector/company trends for the longer term - this market is not for that sort of investor. This has been for many months a run and gun daytrader environment; not a place for theme investors. Back in early October I wrote in (Oct 1: Nowhere to Run, Nowhere to Hide) how there simply was no asset class (ex US Treasuries and US Dollar), no sector, no country to hide in. Everything stunk, and in fact it got worse in the ensuing weeks. September, October, November 2008 might be the worst 3 months ever (I don't have the date) but if not, it has to be in the top 3. Amazon.com (AMZN) posts $0.37, vs. $0.19 a year ago, second quarter EPS on 41% sales rise.
Ford Motor (F) posts $3.88 second quarter loss per share, vs. $0.31 EPS a year ago, on 6.1% revenue drop, pre-tax special charges of $8 billion, including impairments of $5.3 billion for Ford North America long-lived assets, $2.1 billion for Ford Motor Credit's operating lease portfolio.
Daimler AG (DAI) posts 1.40, vs. 1.74, second quarter EPS as the company's interest in Chrysler offset 6.5% revenue rise.
