Major stock indexes close broadly lower, down between 0.7% and 1%, at the bottom of the day's trading range. Stocks gained in the first minutes following the Federal Reserve's statement holding interest rates at record lows. Stocks eventually then turned mixed in late afternoon trading and finally, broadly lower heading into the final bell. Energy shares fell and tugged on the broader market as oil prices tumbled nearly 4%.[More...]

Early Week Earnings Watch

2nd of the 3 big weeks for S&P 500 type companies arrives; last week was an unqualified success of setting expectations low, cutting expenses aggressively and beating very slow to adjust analysts expectations. Now with the bar raised higher as expectations ramped up, I expect the sledding to be a bit tougher. Here are names of interest in the early part of the week; with names the market will be watching and some additional ones that I like to look at. Tuesday will be the more interesting day. I forgot about earnings knee jerk reaction time, when I shorted American Express (AXP) and Capital One (COF) late Friday; both report Thursday so despite extreme overvaluations and gaps in each chart I'll be heading to the sidelines before then on the 2 positions.<br[More...]

Tech - Demand For Hardware Improving

Though the Nasdaq has been one of the best-performing indexes this year, tech stocks could be poised for further gains in the second half of the year. In particular, demand for storage devices and smartphones is showing signs of strength. During the past 2 weeks, several brokerage analysts have raised their profit projections on makers of these products. Storage Device Revenues Higher Than Anticipated Two storage makers recently raised their quarterly guidance. Seagate Technology (STX) said last week that both unit demand and pricing were "tracking favorably". As a result, the company expects fiscal fourth-quarter revenues to be in a range of $2.2 to $2.3 billion. Previously, STX had guided for[More...]

The Quantum Leap of Quantum Computing

The electronics and computing industries are getting primed for a massive transformation in the years ahead. Quantum technologies that were only theories in scientific journals just a few years ago are being prototyped in labs now. These new components will change the way we live forever. They will also create transformational profit opportunities. If you missed the chance to buy into the computer industry when it was young, this is a second shot… Currently, the mainstream electronics industry processes data by moving bunches of electrons about in huge batches. Think of the components in your PC as electrical plumbing. Data are usually stored as batches of electrons. Imagine your computer’s hard drive as a bunch of very small buckets, some full of water, some not. This will change. Improved materials technologies from emerging nanosciences are allowing us to replace batches of electrons with the smallest individual[More...]
