Biggest Declines Among S&P

The following is a list of the S&P 500 firms where the analysts have been cutting their expectations for the current fiscal year the most over the last month. Most likely these firms reported disappointing earnings or gave negative guidance on their conference calls. Historically, you have not wanted to be invested in companies where the analysts who follow them most closely see the earnings prospects diminishing. Also, estimates in motion tend to remain in motion. The first bit of bad news is rarely the last (the cockroach theory). This means that the current expectations, even though down from last month, are probably still to high for these firms. To weed out anomalies, only those firms that are currently expected to earn more than $0.50 in 2009 are included and only those firms where there are a minimum of three estimates in the system. Sunoco Swings To A Loss

Recently, Sunoco Inc. (SUN) reported weaker-than-expected second-quarter results, as rising crude oil prices and weak demand for gasoline and diesel pulled down its refining margins. Loss per share, excluding special items, came in at 27 cents, significantly below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a penny per share in profits. ? In the year-ago period, the Pennsylvania-based marketer of petroleum products earned 52 cents per share. Revenue was down 51% year-over-year to $7.5 billion. Refining & Supply ? The Refining & Supply segment lost $77 million during the quarter, as against a profit of $27 million in the year-earlier period, mainly on account of lower realized margins and lower production volumes. Gasoline Gets More Expensive

Monday marks the 48th day in a row that gasoline prices have risen, even as demand for gas remains weak. This streak matches a record for this decade as oil has increased rapidly from its lows in conjunction with the U.S. dollar’s drop in value. Because oil is priced in U.S. dollars, the rise in prices has not been as severe for buyers using non-U.S. currency. On Monday, crude oil sold off nearly 3% as the dollar strengthened and equity markets around the world dropped. Opinions among analysts very greatly, but it appears that demand has not been a primary driver of the gains in oil and gasoline prices, at least not in comparison to the decline of the dollar. This could be a scary prospect as the markets are hoping to see the green shoots develop into a full blow consumer driven recovery. Sunoco posts $312 million quarterly loss

Nov. 6--Sunoco Inc. yesterday reported a $312 million third-quarter loss, a stark demonstration of how badly oil-refining profit has eroded in the year since the stock market crashed.
The Philadelphia refining and marketing company, which announced plans last month to idle its Eagle Point refinery in New Jersey, told employees this week that it would freeze pensions and post-retirement medical benefits after July 1, 2010, to cut costs.
"We continue to expect a challenging market for petroleum and chemical products due to ongoing economic weakness and additional global supply," said Lynn L. Elsenhans, Sunoco's chief executive officer.
