Choppy Session Ends Positive

The indices ended to the plus side, but it was very choppy. The day started out with a down move and then an immediate reversal. When the Nasdaq 100 made new lows and the S&P 500 didn’t, that caused a positive divergence. They then snapped back very sharply on positive economic news, with the NDX jumping from1657 to 1689, or 32 points in about 35-40 minutes. The SPX rallied from 1037 to 1052.[More...]

Late Morning Rollover!

The indices started the week on a negative note, but it sure was different in the morning. The day started out with a sharp move up, testing the highs on the Nasdaq 100, forming a triple top of sorts there, but couldn’t punch through. The S&P 500 at the same time reached as high as 1092 and tagged is 4-day declining tops line, but failed there as well. They then sold off very sharply in late morning trade, with the NDX dropping from 1778 to 1740, a 38-point drop in less than an hour, and the SPX dropping 25 ,from 1091 to 1066.[More...]

The indices were up early, backed off immediately, stabilized, came on again, and made their session highs on the Nasdaq 100 just before lunch hour. The indices suffered a down day to start the week. Most of the losses occurred in the first half hour. The indices gapped down big, then went sharply lower from there, held last Thursday’s lows on the Nasdaq 100, and slightly took them out on the S&P 500. Mixed Narrow Session To Start The Week

The indices had a strong opening and vaulted to new 2009 highs today early on, but reversed mid-morning, came down, bounced around, tried to rally back, failed at resistance and rolled over. They did get a late bounce again in the last hour, but that was taken back just before the close. Only a last 10-minute bounce brought them off the lows. Net on the day, it was a mixed session, with the Dow up slightly by just 3.32 to 9509.28, about 80 points off the high. The S&P 500 was down 0.56 to 1025.57, 10 points off its high, and the Nasdaq 100 was down 3 even at 1634.78, 14 points off its high. Advance-declines were slightly positive by just 70 issues on New York and negative by 220 issues on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 6 to 5 positive on New York on total volume of about 1 1/4 billion. Sharp in Talks With Chinese Firm to Produce LCDs

Feb. 21--OSAKA -- Sharp Corp. is in talks with a major Chinese electronics maker SVA (Group) Co. to jointly produce in China liquid crystal display panels used for TV sets, paving the way for its first offshore production of the products, sources familiar with the negotiation said Saturday.
But as the recent appreciation of the yen has eroded its profits, Sharp wants to shift production overseas to boost its competitiveness, the sources said.
Sharp is also considering an alternate plan to sell the production equipment at its Kameyama factory in Mie Prefecture to SVA so that the Chinese company can manufacture the TV panels, the sources said.
