The following is a list of the S&P 500 firms where the analysts have been cutting their expectations for the current fiscal year the most over the last month. Most likely these firms reported disappointing earnings or gave negative guidance on their conference calls. Historically, you have not wanted to be invested in companies where the analysts who follow them most closely see the earnings prospects diminishing. Also, estimates in motion tend to remain in motion. The first bit of bad news is rarely the last (the cockroach theory). This means that the current expectations, even though down from last month, are probably still to high for these firms. To weed out anomalies, only those firms that are currently expected to earn more than $0.50 in 2009 are included and only those firms where there are a minimum of three estimates in the system. Lately I have parsing the Durable Goods reports (read latest post) to more precisely identify what is going on with technology hardware manufacturing. Today Goldman Sachs released a report that focuses on the other big part of the hi-tech picture: software. Suffice to say, it wasn't pretty. Here is a quote from the report: "The worst of the IT-spending slowdown likely remains in front of us, as we start the clock on slashed 2009 budgets. We forecast 0 percent revenue growth for our group, below consensus at 5 percent, and 1 percent earnings growth, below Street at 2 percent."Goldman presents a recommended list of big-name IT software stocks that they consider to be "safe" choices in the current environment. 1 Stock Mutual Fund is Positive In America... Was Positive

Well this story is a few days old now but it appears for a minute last week we had 1 stock fund in America that did not lose money. One. Now that's a bear market. By the time the article was written on Nov 9th, it was back down to zero. But in a world where -10% means you outperform most of your peers and even the "best and brightest" in hedge fund world, -5% would be fine too. As of yesterday's close Forester Value (FVALX) was only down 3% year to date - so hopefully my blog entry (ok ok, maybe the CBSMarketwatch article) drives some business his way - he only has $40M in assets after being around since 1999. Money managers clean up portfolio holdings before the end of their tax year. Over 48%of US mutual funds close their books between late October and December. Managers sell stocks with large losses to avoid reporting them on their year-end report to shareholders. Nov. 1--Scareware won't shield computers Thieves in the cyber underworld are making a ton of money pedaling scareware -- rogue security software -- to unsuspecting consumers, a new Internet report says.
Or they're downloading downright-fake software that provides no protection, giving users a false sense that their computer is protected, or software loaded with the malware that it purports to protect against.
In its "Report on Rogue Security Software" released in October, Symantec said computer users pay $30 to $100 each for this rogue software.
