To weed out anomalies, only those firms that are currently expected to earn more than $0.50 in 2009 are included and only those firms where there are a minimum of three estimates in the system. If you have these stocks in your portfolio, you might want to reconsider[More...]

Lately I have parsing the Durable Goods reports (read latest post) to more precisely identify what is going on with technology hardware manufacturing. Today Goldman Sachs released a report that focuses on the other big part of the hi-tech picture: software. Suffice to say, it wasn't pretty. Here is a quote from the report: "The worst of the IT-spending slowdown likely remains in front of us, as we start the clock on slashed 2009 budgets. We forecast 0 percent revenue growth for our group, below consensus at 5 percent, and 1 percent earnings growth, below Street at 2 percent."Goldman presents a recommended list of big-name IT software stocks that they consider to be "safe" choices in the current environment. Microsoft (MSFT) and Oracle (ORCL) are on the list, as[More...]

1 Stock Mutual Fund is Positive In America... Was Positive

Well this story is a few days old now but it appears for a minute last week we had 1 stock fund in America that did not lose money. One. Now that's a bear market. By the time the article was written on Nov 9th, it was back down to zero. But in a world where -10% means you outperform most of your peers and even the "best and brightest" in hedge fund world, -5% would be fine too. As of yesterday's close Forester Value (FVALX) was only down 3% year to date - so hopefully my blog entry (ok ok, maybe the CBSMarketwatch article) drives some business his way - he only has $40M in assets after being around since 1999. Always rooting for the small guy .... actually it appears he has the same back office administrator that I've been working with. Looks like he is a large cap value guy with[More...]

More Short Picks For Thursday

Sellers appear to be gaining the upper hand, as selling gained momentum in the second half of US trading yesterday, and Asian markets sold off overnight. While it is a bit premature to call the end of the rally, given yesterday's volume, a few factors indicate that we may resume our downtrend soon: - Momentum appears to be shifting. European markets are also lower this morning in early trading. - Individual chart setups are increasingly favoring short sellers. - Sentiment seems to have shifted too quickly toward bullishness. Investors have been too hasty in calling a bottom here, as Mish Shedlock discusses in his column Unrelenting Bullishness. - Overall, the volume of this rally has been rather weak. - MT earnings disappointed yesterday, prompting a reversal in commodity stocks. Oil also gave up its[More...]

November 5, 2008: Clean Up When Funds Clear Out

Money managers clean up portfolio holdings before the end of their tax year. Over 48%of US mutual funds close their books between late October and December. Managers sell stocks with large losses to avoid reporting them on their year-end report to shareholders. This causes downward pressure on stocks trading within their portfolio(s)that are at or near 52-week lows. Once the selling subsides, these stocks have historically experienced a price reversal. That said, investors should exercise due diligence before buying any of the companies listed below by analyzing any potential shift in a company's fundamentals and other factors such as sector weight and risk tolerance. Here are the screen parameters used to select the following "sells" from funds: Large-cap and mid-cap stocks trading at or below 30% of their 52-week high and have not bounced above 15% from their 52-week low,and have above-average valuation on both an absolute and[More...]

School's Out and Your Kids Are Online: Do You Know What They've Been Searching for This Summer?

CUPERTINO, CA -- -- 08/10/09 -- During summer vacation, kids have more time to spend online chatting with friends, playing online games, and just surfing the Web. But this added time on the Internet can lead to trouble if parents don't have 'The Talk' with their kids about appropriate and inappropriate online behavior. Symantec has identified the top searches conducted by kids online this summer through its family safety service, OnlineFamily.Norton,* and some of the results may surprise parents and leave them asking 'Who is Fred?' Symantec also uncovered 90 million 'teachable moments' through OnlineFamily.Norton, which are opportunities for parents to start a dialogue with their kids about their online activity. These teachable moments occur when parents are informed by OnlineFamily.Norton that a house Internet rule is being broken, like kids visiting a restricted website, entering a false age on a social networking site, or going over their time limit on the computer.[More...]
