They had been enjoying a nice rally on the general premise of economic recovery, market stabilization, and rising materials prices. The major index charts remain in solid rising trends for now. On a fundamental level, I continue to think this rally has been built on TARP money, short covering, and unrealistic hopes on the economy. Although corporate earnings have exceeded estimates, in the end earnings remain poor. Overbought sectors such as retail, restaurants, real estate, and financials need to contend with a still-deteriorating economic picture. That being the case, I am choosing to remain patient with a majority of short positions while actively trading the long side as long as the rally continues. [More...]

After today's broad-based decline, I get the sense we are at or near an intermediate top. At the same time, I do not expect the bulls to simply roll over here. Looking at some index charts, we can see that while today's action was undeniably bearish, price has support nearby. Volume was not particularly high today. - SPY broke down out of a rising wedge on a very slight increase in volume. The 200 day moving average is not far below. [More...]

Welcome back from the weekend! As the rest of the market returns from the holiday break, we should see more volume and volatility creep back into stocks. Only tomorrow will tell as to whether or not this is a positive or a negative for stock prices. At the moment, futures prices are trading slightly lower. The Dow is off by 44 points, the S&P down 5 points, and the Nasdaq is down 7 points. Crude oil is up another buck, trading at $47.30. Possible Oil Bottom

As I looked through charts tonight, the big standout was the big volume spike in USO, the oil ETF. Oil has sold off relentlessly since July, and price currently sits way below the 200 day moving average. We have seen generally higher volume during the past week, and extremely high volume today. I am finding more charts that look good on the long side, although most would benefit from a low volume pullback. Here is the my watchlist, all long: TNH, APWR, PXP, PDO, MTL, DO, SMH, AG, ZEUS, CLS, RRC, RIO, CNQ, FCX, AUY, TBSI, EXM, GPOR, XEC, CCJ, CHL, CRS, BEAV, WAG, ATI, PCP, APA, WW, EGLE, MPEL, RAH, ADCT, EGY, RIG, ENER. While the watchlist is dominated by long picks, I am not fully in the bullish camp yet.
