Fortunately my portfolio management methods don’t revolve around frequent trading. One of my kids came up to me recently and said, “What did you do today, Dad?” I said, “I made one trade, and I did a bunch of research.” He then asked, “How often do you trade?” I answered, “That was my first trade in a week, and I haven’t traded much in the last two months, but that’s not normal. There is no normal for me. When the market is really volatile, I trade a lot more, selling when stocks are rising, and buying when they are selling off. The Meek Continue To Dominate Equities

Early in April after a month long run off the bottom I posted a list of equities that gained at least 60% in the preceding 4 weeks (Apr 5: The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: 92 Stocks Over $10 Returning 60%+) The list was a whose who of beaten down merchandise. Generally, by week 4-5 of an oversold rally these type of names begin to peter out but the ramp has been relentless in lower quality, low price stocks. My gut tells me quant (and other varieties) of hedge funds have been shorting these names, using fundamental reasons - expecting some pullback after huge runs - only to be run over again and again even in week 6 and 7 of this rally. All it takes nowadays is saying "business has stabilized at the worst levels we've seen in decades" to elicit glee and massive short covering rallies. (7:11am ET) There was plenty of economic data released in the US during the day; however the equity market sidetracked until 2pm ET, when with prices at modest losing levels on the week until that point, suddenly, and for no discernable reason, there was a rally that left the indexes with small gains through Thursday. Perhaps traders were anticipating a positive quarterly report from Google (GOOG +2.4% on +151% of average daily trading volume)? After the close, the company did not disappoint, beating both revenue and EPS estimates. The company posted net income of $1.42 billion ($5.16/share), up +8% from the $1.31 billion ($4.84/share) recorded during the same period a year ago. Revenue for 1Q2009 increased +10% to $4.07 billion, from $3.7 billion, excluding traffic acquisition costs. (8:25am ET) The main focus of traders today will be the 1Q2009 earnings report from JP Morgan (JPM), and the close scrutiny of the data and hype that will follow. After hitting a low of $14.93 in early March, JPM has rallied +118.1% to yesterday’s close of $32.56. (9:30am ET) Stocks in NY sank at the open following various negative reports from TV talking heads, though trade volume was weak on the Easter Monday. After the close, Goldman Sachs surprised with unusually positive revenue and earnings. Today, President Obama will be making a speech on the state of the economy. Traders are confused. Yesterday was pretty much a lost day in the market. Very little of consequence happened. By the close, the DJIA’s small loss (-25.57 -0.32% to 8057.81) offset the small gain in the S&P (+2.17 +0.25% to 858.73), while the NASDAQ (+0.77 +0.05% to 1653.31) was flat. The Toronto Composite (+98.50 +1.07% to 9285.6) and the Toronto Venture Board (+11.89 +1.23% to 980.86) were stronger as the metal miners and goldminers enjoyed a good day. (8:05am ET) Stocks closed Monday's session in NY lower on a lightly-traded day, but much higher Week over Week. Through Friday, the major market indexes saw their largest four-week gains in seventy-six years. Now the market is preparing for 1Q2009 earnings season, which gets underway today with Alcoa (AA). On Monday, the DJIA (-41.74 -0.52% to 7975.85), S&P (-7.02 -0.83% to 835.48), and NASDAQ (-15.16 -0.93% to 1606.71) could not make headway against concerns the major banks may be preparing to release negative quarterly reports. The Toronto Composite (-49.59 -0.55% to 9016.17), and Venture Board (-12.42 -1.27% to 963.17) were also down on the day, but higher Week over Week. Suncor, Petro-Canada Merge to Create Company Worth $43.3 Billion - Mar 23 2009 6:56PM

CALGARY - The merging of Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) and former Crown corporation Petro-Canada (TSX:PCA) could create a Canadian energy giant hefty enough to compete with heavyweights like ExxonMobil Corp. (NYSE:XOM) in the North American arena.
The combined company, which would have a market capitalization of $43.3-billion and would operate under the Suncor name, would be the largest energy company in Canada and the fifth largest in North America.
Under the proposed all-stock deal worth more than $19 billion, Petro-Canada shareholders would own 40 per cent of the new Calgary-headquartered entity and Suncor shareholders would own the rest.

Total Covets Big Oil Sands Project

PARIS -- French oil giant Total SA said Wednesday it will offer $505 million in cash for Calgary-based UTS Energy Corp. in a deal to gain access to the company's stake in a large oil sands project in northern Alberta.
Paris-based Total said its per share offer for all outstanding shares of UTS Energy would be launched "in the coming days" and would run for "at least 60 days."
The deal is conditional on Total receiving at least 66.67 percent of UTS Energy's shares.

Teck Cominco Ltd. (TSX:TCK.B) of Vancouver cuts 1,400 jobs worldwide, more than a third from Western Canada.
About 400 jobs will be affected in British Columbia and 105 in Alberta.
Zinc miner HudBay Minerals Inc. (TSX:HBM) will shut down its Chisel North zinc mine and concentrator in the northern Manitoba community of Snow Lake, affecting 100 jobs.

BRIEF: Red Dog Mine to Reduce Staff Through Attrition

Jan. 8--Stung by low commodity prices, the operator of the Red Dog Mine near Kotzebue plans a small staff reduction -- solely through attrition -- at the big zinc mine in the first quarter of the year.
Fewer than 10 positions will be affected at Red Dog, which employs about 450, and no cuts are planned at Teck Cominco Ltd.'s other Alaska mine, the Pogo gold mine near Delta Junction, said Sarah Goodman, a spokeswoman for Teck, a Canadian company that operates copper, coal and zinc mines around the world.
Teck decided not to lay off anyone at Red Dog or Pogo because of the challenges it has attracting and retaining people to work at such remote sites, Goodman said.

Falling Prices Dry Up Interest in Oil Sands

TORONTO -- Canada's booming oil sands industry is cooling off as crude prices plummet from record summer highs to around $50 a barrel.
Petro-Canada and its partners Teck Cominco Ltd. and UTS Energy Corp. have postponed a decision on further investment in a $19.5 billion oil sands project in northern Alberta and shelved plans to build an upgrade refinery -- becoming the latest to put off investment decisions on a mine and the latest to ditch upgrades.
Oil majors like Royal Dutch Shell and other companies are re- examining the viability of oil sands development in an area that could hold as much as 175 billion barrels of oil.

Teck Announces Possible Andacollo Permitting Delay

- Teck Resources Limited announced today that challenges to the previously granted permits for the water supply arrangements for its Andacollo copper hypogene project may result in delays to the start-up of the project. Teck is in dialogue with national and regional authorities to resolve the issue. Teck has contingency plans for alternate water supply and is now proceeding with them in case they become necessary. Given the status of the relevant permits, Teck believes that there is now a risk that start-up of the hypogene project will be delayed beyond the current target for first ore through the mill of November 2009. The length of any delay will depend on the outcome of discussions with authorities and the nature of required changes to Andacollo's water system, if any.[More...]

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- -- 08/06/09 -- Teck Resources Limited today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Gleichen Resources Ltd. for the sale of Teck's indirect 78.8% interest in the Morelos gold project in Mexico for US$150 million in cash plus Gleichen common shares that will constitute 4.9% of Gleichen's issued and outstanding shares as at closing. Completion of the transaction is subject to a financing condition in favour of Gleichen, to completion of legal and financial due diligence, and to other customary terms and conditions.
