Vodafone Leads Greek Broadband

Vodafone (VOD), the world’s largest revenue-generating wireless carrier, has reportedly launched the most advanced wireless high-speed Internet service in Greece based on the new HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access) mobile broadband technology. The newly launched service which is also one of the first of its kind in Europe, will offer theoretical peak download speed of 21.6 megabit per second (Mbps), a significant improvement from the present download speeds of 14.4 Mbps offered by Vodafone in Greece. The company will initially offer this advancement in the selected areas of Athens and extend the service in other areas in due course. On yesterday's post a reader asked; You have indicated that you do not like broad based indices like the EFA which has high exposure to Japan and questioned why one would want exposure to this country. Question for you: Do you believe that the markets have priced all known public knowledge and that it is quite challenging to forecast the future? If so, why would you now want to invest in a broad based fund? If not, how can you forecast the unknown and make a determination to avoid a country like Japan, amongst others? I have never been 100% on board with efficient market hypothesis. (8:25am ET) The main focus of traders today will be the 1Q2009 earnings report from JP Morgan (JPM), and the close scrutiny of the data and hype that will follow. After hitting a low of $14.93 in early March, JPM has rallied +118.1% to yesterday’s close of $32.56. There was a high of $34.15 on Tuesday. http://tinyurl.com/da6dcv JP Morgan reported Q1 net income of $2.14 billion, or $0.40/share, down -10% from a year earlier, but beat analysts' expectations. Revenue increased +48% to $25.03 billion. WSJ reported that CEO Jamie Dimon said the firm extended about $150 billion in new credit to consumer and corporate customers during the quarter. (9:39am ET) Equity prices as shown in the major market indexes are at multi-year lows and traders are in a state of capitulation. By the end of the day, Monday, the DJIA (-250.89 -3.41% to 7114.78), the S&P 500 (-26.72 -3.47% to 743.33), and NASDAQ Composite (-53.51 -3.71% to 1387.72) closed down at support levels going back to the 1990’s. The Toronto Composite (-302.32 -3.80% to 7647.67) and Venture Board (-13.96 -1.56% to 878.94) were down there as well. There were no winning sectors as Healthcare (XLV -2.0%), a major loser, was the best of the lot. Basic Materials (XLB -6.1%), pulled down by Chemicals, led to the downside. The Financials (XLF -3.5%) dropped equal to the broad indexes, and much of the loss was in the REITs ($DJR), which fell -7.8%, and not the banks. (9:20am ET) Markets bombed on Tuesday. Disillusioned with Congress and uninspired by the Obama administration, Main Street is quickly losing faith in Wall Street, slowly realizing that the deleveraging of the economy may forever change the fortunes of the average American. Greedy politicians and overpaid bankers are becoming public enemy number one. Right from the opening bell, stock prices plunged. With most of the damage done in the first 30 minutes, the session closed with the major indexes down sharply: DJIA -297.81 -3.79% to 7552.60; S&P 500 -37.67 -4.56% to 789.17; and NASDAQ Composite -63.70 -4.15% to 1470.66. The Toronto composite fell -299.40 -3.45% to 8378.70, while the Venture Board dropped just -6.48 -0.70% to 919.16. Telefonica Conquering Brazil

We highlight the following stocks: Telefonica (TEF), Telemig (TMB), Vivo (VIV) and Telesp (TSP). Yesterday it was announced that Brazilian industrial production declined in December 2008 12.4% from November and 14.5% from December 2007. Those numbers were worse than expected, and reflects the huge impact of the crisis in an economy that was growing almost 7% per year. Zoe creditors move to seize control of properties: IT WAS inevitable that the lenders to Liam Carroll's Zoe Group would mobilise quickly to seize control of properties after the courts extinguished any hope of the group's survival last Tuesday.
Six of Zoe's eight lenders, which account for most of its [euro]1.3 billion, have seized or are taking control of properties by appointing insolvency practitioners as receivers.
Seven receivers (Anglo Irish Bank has appointed two) will now assess the group's labyrinthine structure to assess which lender has security over which properties.

The broadband race is on.
In recent weeks, the United States, Britain, Canada, Finland, Germany, Portugal and Spain have all included measures to expand broadband access and to bolster connection speeds in their planned economic stimulus packages.
Australia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Japan and South Korea have announced separate broadband plans, according to a compilation by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the association of free-market democracies.

A Big Boost for Mobile Laptops

Some of the world's biggest mobile operators, PC manufacturers, and chipmakers will reveal on Sept. 30 that they are uniting to pre-install support for high-speed mobile data services into notebook PCs. Backers hope the move will result in wider consumer use of so-called "mobile broadband" that could rival or even surpass use of Wi-Fi hotspots.
If the plan works, it could boost third-generation [3G] mobile broadband in much the same way that Wi-Fi exploded after Intel (INTC) built support for it into the Centrino chipset.
Consumers will have an easier time getting online while on the move: Instead of having to search for a Wi-Fi hotspot, owners of laptops equipped with the new technology will be able to connect wirelessly to the Internet wherever they are, as long as they're within coverage range and have a mobile subscription with data service.

TelefÃ³Nica and China Unicom Enter into a Broad Strategic Alliance and a Mutual Investment Agreement

(NYSE:TEF) (LSE:TDE) and China Unicom have entered into a strategic alliance agreement pursuant to which the parties agreed that they would cooperate in various business areas such as the joint acquisition of infrastructure and equipment for customers, the joint development of wireless service platforms, the joint provision of services to multinational enterprises, roaming, R&D, the sharing of best practices and technical, operational and management expertise, the joint development of a set of strategic initiatives within the framework of network and technology development, as well as establish an exchange program for their managers.
After the completion of the transaction, China Unicom's shareholding in TelefÃ³nica will be approximately 0.88% and TelefÃ³nica's shareholding in China Unicom will increase to approximately 8% from 5.38%.
Mr. Chang Xiaobing, Chairman of China Unicom, says that "we are pleased to see that the strategic partnership between China Unicom and TelefÃ³nica has been further deepened on the current basis.

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has been selected to provide Telefonica O2 Germany with an IMS core system with an IMS-based VoIP application server.
This represents a major step forward for O2 in Germany, as it migrates its existing fixed and mobile systems into a converged IP-based Next-generation network (NGN).
