Below is a summary of updates to the BioMedReports.com FDA Calendar, which includes a database of 288 entries as of 8/5/09. The calendar was originally created by Mike Havrilla to track companies with pending new drug, biological agent, or medical device new product decisions at the FDA. With the launch of BioMedReports.com, the FDA Calendar has expanded to include the following categories: pending new submissions to the FDA (e.g. NDA, ANDA, BLA, 510k, PMA, sNDA, sBLA filings), pending complete (...)[More...]

Sequenom (Nasdaq: SQNM) Bombshell

I am saying "wow" a lot of late - Sequenom (SQNM) is out with something after hours I've never seen in all the years I've been doing stocks; a delay in their Down Syndrome test due to employee mishandling of data. The stock is down 50% after hours. Worse - this was our only long position I actually have a hedge against, but I covered it into the weakness early this week - basically have 50 shares short as a holding position. On the long side we only have a 1.4% stake since the stock chart has been awful but looks like that will be 0.7% by tomorrow. Not good - it's one thing to be hit by an earnings situation but this is out of left field. Here I thought this was my personal Dendreon (DNDN) - something I'd stick with in the long run, waiting for the magical day to arrive it goes up 200% in a session. Well, we will see what[More...]

RVs Losing Speed

Makers of big-ticket items and luxury goods suffer the most during times like these, as consumers delay large purchases and reduce their expenses. Companies that recognize that they are in cyclical industries can put themselves in positions to outlast downturns and thereby emerge from them with fewer competitors. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the RV business, where sales have seemingly dropped off a cliff.
A rotation day is afoot; strange to see some of the old winners just sit flat on their back as the China/tech/commodities trade if on. Almost as if there is not enough money to push everything up at once. We are now back to the top of the "range" - if we get north of S&P 880 we'll consider this a more bullish scenario. We are setting up for a sell the news reaction to Monday's "this is how we are going to save the world" announcements by government. Thoratec (THOR) reported a nice beat last night but the stock is moribund. Heart device maker Thoratec Corp. said its profit jumped 73 percent in the fiscal fourth quarter due to strong sales of its HeartMate II pump.
