All over the world right now tens of thousands of bankers and other financial services workers are being given a bin bag to put their personal possessions in as their employer dispenses with their services. Many would say they brought it on themselves with reckless excesses when regulation was light and money was easy. Never mind the cause, what is for certain is that the banking industry is expecting a lean time in the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) business. But the bankers are going to find that one industry is still going to be M&A crazy. And it is the video game industry. Here’s why: Unlike every other industry <a[More...]

Activision: A Bright Light In The Dark Consumer World?

I am long a specialty retail play. I had to slap myself out of the stupor for owning one in an environment I have dubbed as an impending consumer recession. What am I long? Well, how about some Activision Blizzard (ATVI). I was fortunate/unfortunate enough (we'll know later) to get filled on some of my orders in the $10.xx region and I had a few more orders down in the $9.xx that did not get filled. So, why am I long a retail name, much less a specialty retail name. Well, first and foremost, it is mainly as a hedge to some of my other retail shorts. So, let's make that abundantly clear. I am bearish on the consumer and the economy. But, such bearishness must be given protection to any rampant rallies that might occur and I've selected ATVI, as they are currently dominating competitors such as Electronic Arts (ERTS) and THQ (THQI). Secondly, I would propose that video games are by no means recession resistant, but they are less[More...]

Game Industry Consolidation During The Economic Downturn

In The Times last week there was an article titled “M&A (Mergers and Acquisitions) deals worth $90billion collapse as volatility makes valuations impossible” which would seem to be bad news for the massive game industry consolidation that we are currently in the middle of. So what is going to happen? The game industry has been expanding massively over the last three years. This is not just one area that is prospering, the growth is across a number of areas: The largest growth area has been in casual gaming.[More...]

Some Charts for the Short Side

The prior post has a sector breakdown and charts for oil, natural gas, and the dollar. The indices are near resistance, and there's a good chance we see more of a bounce in commodities. At the same time, I'm not finding too many short setups that I really like. That could change quickly with some distribution in the broader market. Several of the charts below are commodity-related, so I will be careful with entries and stops given the market conditions.- SKF is looking attractive here. I have a smaller IRA account that is entirely in SKF as of Tuesday, more as a medium-term hold. I have visions of it revisiting the highs of just last month.<a[More...]
