Dec. 1--Like the Beatles, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley and Boston police have discovered that happiness is a warm gun.
That's because a Dorchester man has become the first defendant convicted of pistol possession by a Massachusetts jury based on thermal imaging evidence.
Giving new meaning to the catchphrase "packing heat," investigators used the technology to successfully link the warmth from 25-year-old Jose Rodrigues' hand to a loaded 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun they found in a snowbank in Dorchester on Jan. 12 as they were chasing him.

Texas Instruments' Third-Quarter Sales Beat Estimates

Oct. 20--Texas Instruments Inc. said Monday that its financial results in the third quarter were better than expected, as customers started to ramp up their orders.
The positive news is the latest sign that the technology industry is starting to crawl out of the recession.
Dallas-based TI had third-quarter sales of $2.88 billion and a profit of $538 million, or 42 cents a share.

Texas Instruments 2Q Profit Falls 56% but Beats Expectations

Jul. 20--Texas Instruments Inc. reported second-quarter financial results Monday that were a bit higher than analysts had expected and issued an optimistic outlook for the rest of the year.
President and chief executive office Rich Templeton said in a statement that TI is starting to burn through excess inventory built up after customers got skittish.
"At the same time, TI inventory again declined, and by working with our distributors we were able to further reduce channel inventory by about 10 percent.

UTC May Increase Three Student Fees Along With 9 Percent Tuition Increase

Feb. 26--MEMPHIS -- Along with a 9 percent tuition increase, UTC Chancellor Roger Brown is proposing three student fee increases for next fall.
The fee would help to fund wellness center jobs, he said.
He also said he wants to implement a $30 fee per semester hour for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's five-semester nursing program, money that would be used for equipment and could generate $52,650.

Power-Sharing Deal: Technology Giant to Incorporate Upstart Bethlehem Company's Energy-Saving Semiconductors into Its Products

Feb. 14--Ciclon Semiconductor Device Corp., a start-up company that began in 2004 with three employees in Bethlehem, has been sold to global giant Texas Instruments for an undisclosed price, company officials announced Friday.
The deal will allow Ciclon, which designs energy-saving high-frequency semiconductors, to expand its products and customer base while allowing Texas Instrument to improve energy efficiency in areas such as higher power computing and server systems.
"Combining Ciclon's technology and expertise with TI's industry-leading power management semiconductor portfolio gives us a tremendous advantage when solving customers' complex power design requirements," said Steve Anderson, senior vice president for Texas Instruments' Power Management division.

Texas Instruments to Cut 1,200 Jobs in North Texas

Jan. 27--Roughly two-thirds of the 1,800 layoffs that Texas Instruments Inc. announced Monday afternoon will come in North Texas, where the company employs about 11,000 people.
And nearly all of those 1,200 cuts will come before the end of March.
The layoffs, combined with 1,600 buyouts, will reduce TI's overall head count by 12 percent and save the Dallas-based company $500 million a year.

DALLAS _ A recession doesn't mean the death of innovation in the consumer tech industry.
During that recession, Apple Inc. introduced the iPod, Microsoft Corp. rolled out its original Xbox video game console, broadband household penetration rates in the U.S. more than doubled from 2000, and Google Inc. was becoming an integral part of modern life.
John Donovan, chief technology officer at Dallas-based AT&T Inc., said consumer technology changes so fast that any company that tries to pause is likely to be overrun by its competitors.
