My wife keeps telling me to buy stock in TJ Maxx (TJX), as she shops in their stores, and believes they run a good operation. I have looked but not touched, as they do not fit our investment profile. We have Walmart (WMT) in the retail sector, currently up 9% and they pay a better dividend.[More...]

Cisco (CSCO) reported strong results last night, and also raised guidance going forward. The upbeat news was met with enthusiasm by investors, and is helping tech stocks lead the action so far today (particularly semis).[More...]

Stocks end higher but in the lower end of the day's range, clocking between a 0.6% and 0.75% advance.

Stocks gained broadly after retailers posted solid September sales, surprising many analysts. Alcoa kicked off earnings season with an unexpected profit and the Labor Department reported a drop in weekly jobless claims. In addition, the European Central Bank and the Bank of England left rates unchanged at record lows, which lent stocks worldwide some support.[More...]

Mad Money: Big Lots (BIG) May Be The Discount King

The theme for Mad Money this week has been Cramer’s quest to crown the discount king. He believes, even though he is bullish on the stock market, there must be a discount retailer stock that stands out above the rest. Thus far he has disqualified both TJX Companies (TJX) and Costco (COST), but BJ’s Wholesale Club (BJ) is still in the running. Last night, he delved into Big Lots (BIG), which recently reported a very good quarter and raised guidance for the second straight quarter. As Cramer mentioned, only Apple (AAPL) and Salesforce.com (CRM) have beaten the street’s view and raised guidance in any “meaningful way”.[More...]

Mad Money: Sizing Up Retail Warehouses: COST, WMT, BJ

“…Costco has simply executed poorly this year. I expect improvement, but I can’t wait for it when B.J.’s stock beckons. I want to make it really clear, I vastly prefer going to Costco over going to a B.J.’s…
I love regional/national plays B.J.’s got 180 stores mostly in the northeast and southeast. Costco has 557 worldwide, they’re more concentrated in the west and south. Retail stocks tend to run out of the room to run higher when the underlying companies. Walmart peaked when they were basically in every state. B.J.’s has plans to accelerate the store growth. Costco is opening 15 this years, but it’s three times the size as B.J.’s. By the way, B.J. had always had a problem trying to site stores. Now, they can add stores, because real estate is cheaper. That’s not the case a year ago.[More...]

Oct. 18--Sensing that the recession may be history, some investors are sizing up the stocks of higher-end retailers.

Jeff Strong, who is pursuing an MBA in the Applied Security Analysis Program at the Wisconsin School of Business, isn't one of them.

Despite some heartening economic signals and a robust stock market rebound, Strong said he believes consumers will avoid returning to their devil-may-care ways.

Glimmer of Light at End of Tunnel for Retailers

Oct. 9--Back-to-school shopping needs apparently outweighed consumers' concerns about the recession in September, allowing a lot of retailers to report better sales than expected and even, in the case of several chains, raise earnings guidance for the quarter.

"Small as that gain was, it was the first year-over-year increase since July 2008, and marked a significant psychological turning point for the industry performance, as well as the start of the retail recovery," said Michael P. Niemira, chief economist and director of research for the New York-based International Council of Shopping Centers, in his analysis of the results.

"It's still unclear whether the consumer is back or not," said Steven Baumgarten, an analyst with PNC Capital Advisors in Philadelphia who noted about half of the chains that reported results still reported decreases in sales at stores open at least a year, a key industry statistic sometimes called comparable store sales.
