The summer of 2009 is drawing to a close and as a number of us return from holidays and vacations our attention can once again be directed towards the stock market, our investment portfolios and the prospects of investing over the remainder of the year. The problem so far in 2009 is that despite a huge amount of volatility earlier in the year the rest has been...well...pretty dry. Stocks, corporate bonds and mutual funds have all appreciated off their lows and a lot of investors are scratching their heads wondering where the value is in this current environment. When you look at most measures of quantitative value such as price to earnings (P/E), price to book (P/B) or dividend yield there are a lot of stocks that don’t appear cheap and the ones that are cheap are inexpensive for a very good reason; a poor investment. Cooler weather drives up October retail sales

Nov. 6--Consumers continue to shop for value and seek promotions that offer steep discounts, yet October retail sales were helped by a cool blast that boosted demand for seasonal merchandise, results from the latest Thomson Reuters Same Store Sales Index show.
"Consequently, expect retailers to bake discounts into the full price to create the impression of discounting," said Jharonne Martis, the reporting analyst who compiles the index for Thomson Reuters.
Additionally, retailers are facing significantly easier year-ago comparisons," Martis said.

IMS Health bought for $5.2 billion

Nov. 6--IMS Health Inc., which provides market research to the pharmaceutical and health-care industries, said yesterday that it agreed to be acquired for $5.2 billion, including the assumption of debt.
The buyers are private-equity firm TPG Capital and the investment board of the Canada Pension Plan.
It expects about 170 of those dismissals to occur in the United States.

NW Natural's quarterly loss smaller than expected

Nov. 4--Northwest Natural Gas Co. lost $6.7 million, or 25 cents per share, on revenues of $116.9 million in the quarter ended Sept 30.
That compares to a loss of $10.1 million, or 38 cents per share, on revenues of $109.7 million in the third quarter of 2008.
The utility typically loses money in the third quarter, when demand is at its weakest.

Falling gas prices help Northwest Natural boost profits

Nov. 4--Despite the economic slowdown's depressing effect on customer demand, Northwest Natural Gas Co. has been able to boost profits this year by purchasing gas for far less than it forecasted last fall.
The utility says its commodity costs are a strict, dollar-for-dollar pass-through to customers on which it makes no markup.
The difference may seem semantic, but regulators believe the sharing mechanism is an incentive to buy gas judiciously.

Recession Continues to Eat at PGE Utility Earnings

Oct. 30--Portland General Electric Co. said Thursday that recession continues to drag down demand and undermine financial results even as it cuts costs to operate more efficiently.
As a result, the company said it will file another rate case in 2010, seeking to increase electricity rates for its 818,000 customers in January 2011.
Utility results are a good proxy for the level of economic activity in general.

KBR Beats Quarterly Forecast Despite 14 Percent Profit Drop

Oct. 30--Houston-based KBR beat Wall Street profit expectations but still reported a 14 percent drop in its third-quarter profit as its U.S. government work declined.
The company noted that last year's results included a 7 cents-per-share boost from the sale of its stake in an overseas business unit.
Revenue for the third quarter was $2.8 billion, down from $3 billion a year ago.

Aflac Freezes Merit Raises for Employees: Freeze in Place Until Domestic Sales Rebound

Oct. 30--A day after reporting a decline in third-quarter U.S. sales, Aflac Inc. informed employees Thursday the company will freeze performance-based raises until domestic sales rebound.
Aflac announced Wednesday its earnings for the third quarter of 2009.
While operating earnings met company expectations and exceeded those of 19 analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial, U.S. sales fell short.

Flu-Related Sales Help PSS Earnings

Oct. 29--PSS World Medical Inc. (NASDAQ: PSSI) reported today sharply higher quarterly profits and raised its earnings targets for the rest of the fiscal year, due in part to increased sales of flu-related products.
Jacksonville-based PSS, which distributes supplies to physician offices and elder care facilities, said net income for the second quarter ended Oct. 2 rose 75 percent to $21.7 million, or 37 cents per diluted share.
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer David Bronson said in an interview today that about five to six cents of the projected increase in earnings can be attributed to demand for H1N1 flu-related products.

Aflac More Than Triples Third Quarter Profits: Investment Losses Hurt, but Not As Much As 2008

Oct. 29--Aflac Inc. profits more than tripled in the third quarter of 2009, primarily because it did not incur as much in investment losses as it saw a year ago.
Net earnings came in at $363 million, or 77 cents per diluted share, compared to $100 million, or 21 cents per share, the same time last year.
When it comes to measuring the company's financial performance, Aflac prefers to look at operating earnings, which exclude realized investment gains and losses and other non-recurring items.

Paccar Reports Slim Profit for the Quarter

Oct. 28--Lean times continued in the third quarter for Bellevue-based Paccar, as demand for trucks in North America and Europe remained depressed.
That's half the sales and finance revenue Paccar booked in the third quarter of last year.
Still, Paccar's results beat Wall Street predictions.
