Jul. 19--Christina Tynan-Wood was giving an interview not long ago to Radio New Zealand, promoting her new book, "How to Be a Geek Goddess: Practical Advice for Using Computers With Smarts and Style" (San Francisco: No Starch Press, $24.95 paperback).
"The guy actually asked me why I'd be interested in such a small demographic," she said, shaking her head in wonder over a salad at Basics in downtown Wilmington.

Apr. 29--I wonder sometimes how I got along without many of today's technological marvels.
The personal computer is the one that stands out most to me but before I get into that, I decided to list some of the technology items that I now take for granted, yet make my life all the more sweeter.
I can't watch TV anymore without a DVR. Not being able to pause and rewind live TV when the phone rings or whatever distraction comes along is simply intolerable.

Head Start Program to Receive Flat Funding

Jan. 15--MT. VERNON -- District 80 will receive flat funding from the federal government for Head Start next year, but notification from the U.S. Department of Education that Teacher Retirement System pay backs are increasing will hit the district budget in all federal grant areas.
Settle said the rub lies in where the money goes that is paid back to the Department of Education.
"It doesn't go to TRS," Settle said.

Texas Pension Funds Say Benefits Secure

Sep. 26--AUSTIN -- Managers of Texas' four big public pension funds say future benefits are secure and they have no plans to ask for financial help from state taxpayers in the wake of the collapse of several Wall Street firms.
Although many huge institutional investors routinely pumped money into the four financial concerns that tanked, leaders of pension funds for Texas teachers and other government employees said Thursday they placed only modest bets on AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Lehman Brothers.
"While there are indeed challenges ahead, the aggregate of Texas public pension plans remain well-funded," the state Pension Review Board said Thursday.

NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc. ("NASDAQ OMX(R)") (Nasdaq:NDAQ) today reported net income attributable to NASDAQ OMX of $60 million, or $0.28 per diluted share, for the third quarter of 2009 compared with net income attributable to NASDAQ OMX of $58 million, or $0.27 per diluted share, in the third quarter of 2008, and net income attributable to NASDAQ OMX of $69 million, or $0.33 per diluted share, in the second quarter of 2009.
For comparison purposes, results for the second and third quarters of 2009 are presented on a non-GAAP basis and exclude merger expenses, losses on the sale of investments, a debt conversion expense, and certain other non-recurring items.
Results for the third quarter of 2008 are presented on a pro forma non-GAAP basis that reflect the financial results of NASDAQ OMX and the Philadelphia Stock Exchange as if they were a combined company for the period presented and exclude merger expenses and certain other non-recurring items.

TriMas Corporation today announced financial results for the quarter ended June 30, 2009. The Company reported quarterly net sales from continuing operations of $208.6 million, a decrease of 26.2% from the second quarter of 2008. Second quarter 2009 income from continuing operations was $9.3 million, a 3.9% decrease from the prior year second quarter. The Company reported second quarter 2009 diluted earnings per share from continuing operations of $0.28, in comparison to $0.29 during the second quarter of 2008, including a per diluted share impact of severance and business restructuring costs in both periods and identified as 'Special Items,' and a $0.22 per diluted share gain on extinguishment of debt in the second quarter 2009. TriMas Corporation -- a diversified manufacturer of engineered and applied products -- today announced that its Cequent Performance Products manufacturing plant in Goshen, Indiana has passed the one millionth-hour mark without having an injury that resulted in a lost work day. This accomplishment represents validation of a program that was started five years ago to improve process flow and linkage in manufacturing operations, while focusing on safety. In addition to reducing lost time accidents, it has also increased the Company's productivity and decreased costs.Cequent's Goshen facility produces and markets a wide array of trailer products and accessories for the original equipment manufacturer, wholesaler-distributor and retail markets. In particular, the plant fabricates trailer hitches, a process that entails a great deal of metalworking operations using saws, presses, drills, along with cut-off and welding equipment. Five years ago, the plant increased its focus on improving the facility's workflow and opted to place employees in a cell manufacturing environment, instead of having all the processes spread out around the plant floor. Machine and assembly operations were organized into linked cell centers, where material travel distances were greatly reduced and visibility was increased.
