Always some winners out there - as I stated last week the indexes were actually not down that much; but a lot of individual names that had previously been holding up took some serious hits. Sour Economy Can't Keep Higher Learning Down: Recession May Be Driving the Pursuit of Education Instead of Depressing It

Sep. 18--Record numbers of students have enrolled at many Texas universities this fall, suggesting that fears the economy would keep students from pursuing an education haven't come true.
"If the economy goes down, you have a number of people who would have been working," said Scott Imberman, an economist at the University of Houston.
"A sinking economy floated all boats," said Dale Wasson, senior associate vice president of enrollment services at the University of Texas-Arlington, where enrollment jumped 12 percent.

Dec. 11--Andrew L. Jefferson Jr., the first black state district judge in Harris County, died from a kidney ailment Monday.
Jefferson's legal career took him from the University of Texas law school, where he was the only black in his class, to judgeships of local civil and criminal courts, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans.
"A giant has fallen," said Houston lawyer Craig Washington.

TSU Prof Accused of Plagiarism: UH Physicist Alleges Grant Proposal Was His

Oct. 30--Texas Southern University officials confirmed Wednesday they are investigating a member of the physics faculty accused of plagiarizing a grant proposal.
Rambis M. Chu, a tenured associate professor of physics, still is teaching at TSU as the investigation continues into a grant proposal he submitted to the U.S. Army Research Laboratory.
Chu is accused of copying a proposal written several years earlier by a physicist at the University of Houston.
