Daily Report For Tuesday, Apr 14, 2009

(9:30am ET) Stocks in NY sank at the open following various negative reports from TV talking heads, though trade volume was weak on the Easter Monday. After the close, Goldman Sachs surprised with unusually positive revenue and earnings. Today, President Obama will be making a speech on the state of the economy. Traders are confused. Yesterday was pretty much a lost day in the market. Very little of consequence happened. By the close, the DJIA’s small loss (-25.57 -0.32% to 8057.81) offset the small gain in the S&P (+2.17 +0.25% to 858.73), while the NASDAQ (+0.77 +0.05% to 1653.31) was flat. The Toronto Composite (+98.50 +1.07% to 9285.6) and the Toronto Venture Board (+11.89 +1.23% to 980.86) were stronger as the metal miners and goldminers enjoyed a good day. Except for Japan’s Nikkei 225 index (-0.92% to 8842.7), prices today were strong in the major international equity markets: Australia (+2.22% to[More...]

The data miners at Bespoke discovered that the stocks in the S&P 500 that have done the worst since January 6, did the best overall during Tuesday’s climb. Stocks that did the best averaged a 4.39% increase while the worst performers added 18.3%.
Half Of All Americans On Brink Of Financial Ruin

Just how troubling is the lack of savings in America? A new study shows that half of all Americans are just a month away from financial ruin. That means a job loss — even if a new one is found shortly thereafter — or some other financial setback, could potentially break the bank for 50 percent of the population. With all the layoffs happening right now that should be a very scary realization for everyone. For more on this, read the following article from HousingWire. Want a stunning figure? Half of Americans now say they are only one month or less away from not being able to meet their financial obligations if they were to lose their job — just two paychecks or less. And of these, more than half — 28 percent of all Americans — say they could not survive financially for more than two weeks without their current job. This disturbing data comes courtesy of the 2009 MetLife Study of the American Dream, released Monday, which looks at how the[More...]

Fed Counts Bullets, Earnings Dominate Calendar

There is a full economic calendar this week, but all eyes will be on the two-day FOMC meeting and the rate decision on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see how the FOMC approaches this meeting. The current Fed Funds target rate is 0-0.25%, which in and of itself is rather strange. It is a moving target, not a fixed rate. Who determines which rate is used? My guess is this meeting will be used to clarify what the rate is. The Fed will either officially reduce it to 0% in a continued effort to resuscitate the economy, or lock it in at 0.25%. This would at least leave the Fed with one perceived bullet in the gun. The rest of the week has a full slate, which starts this morning with the December Existing Home Sales report. Expectations are for a slowdown of 40k units versus the previous month, and I think that is overly optimistic. The housing reports last week both fell flat on their face so I don’t think this report, or the[More...]

Very Difficult Trade

Yesterday, mid day, I sold half of my SDS across the board. As I sat there with my finger literally on the button the SPX was between 1150 and 1155. At that level it was down 26.5% from the peak of 1565. I don't think I would get much of an argument in saying 26.5% is down a lot.Sentiment stinks, no one has faith in anything, the consequences from all the stuff happening will be bad, you can't swing a dead terrorist without hitting a bailout (or similar action), the house of representatives acted as childish as I can ever recall (I don't follow politics that closely however), the US and global financial systems are under siege and there is more.Getting less short after a 26.5% drop in the broad market is not the worst possible trade (hopefully I am not proven wrong). Selling half of SDS does[More...]

Good morning. Premarket futures are in rally mode after the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve announce a rescue plan to save Fannie & Freddie. The news is timely considering that the FDIC was forced to seize IndyMac Bancorp on Friday (the bailout will cost the FDIC an estimated $4-8 billion). In other news, traders are also watching lower energy prices, strength in the U.S. dollar, and that Anheuser-Busch accepted a acquisition offer from InBev after the Belgian company sweetened its offer to $70 per share.
